When to come to us

When a fruit acid peel may be suitable

Dull, tired complexion

Your skin looks grey and dull, make-up no longer sits evenly, and the fresh glow is missing.

Large pores and blemishes

Enlarged pores, blackheads or a tendency towards blemishes bother you – even beyond your younger years.

Fine lines and rough skin

First fine lines and a rougher skin texture become visible, for example on the forehead and cheeks.

Mild pigment spots

Small sun spots or age spots make your complexion look uneven.

Our approach

Our approach to fruit acid peels

A peel is only as good as how well it suits your skin. That is why we begin with a conversation and a close look at your skin type, your sensitivity, your skincare and any skin conditions. We ask about medication, such as acne medication containing vitamin A derivatives, and about a tendency towards cold sores or pigment spots. Then we plan the treatment: the fruit acid acts for only a short, controlled time and is then neutralised. A series of several treatments usually makes sense. Mild, fragrance-free products are suitable for aftercare – as a perfume-free practice, we are happy to advise you on this.

An honest assessment

A fruit acid peel aims for a finer skin appearance, but does not replace dermatological treatment of acne or other skin conditions – how your skin reacts and what you achieve is individual.

Who a fruit acid peel is suitable for

What may speak in favour

  • Dull, tired-looking skin
  • Large pores and mild blemishes
  • Fine lines and rough skin texture
  • Mild, superficial pigment spots

When a different approach is needed

We do not treat in cases of sunburn, open wounds, acute skin inflammation, active cold sores or pronounced acne. Acne and rosacea – an inflammatory skin condition with redness – belong first in dermatological treatment. After acne medication containing vitamin A derivatives, a waiting period is needed. During pregnancy we discuss whether the peel should wait.

In four steps

What happens during a fruit acid peel

  1. Book an appointment

By phone on 089 299655 or online via Doctolib. If possible, do not schedule the peel directly before a holiday in the sun.

  2. Conversation and skin analysis

We look at your skin, discuss skincare, medication and wishes, and clarify whether a fruit acid peel is right for you.

  3. Treatment plan

You will find out which strength we choose, roughly how many treatments make sense, how to prepare your skin and what costs will arise.

  4. Treatment and support

We apply the acid, neutralise it and care for the skin. Between treatments we adjust the strength to your skin.

Transparent from the start

Costs and health insurance

A fruit acid peel is an aesthetic treatment and is generally a self-pay service, including for patients with private health insurance. We bill according to the German fee schedule for doctors (GOÄ). The costs depend on the size of the area treated and the number of treatments. We will tell you before treatment what costs will arise, so that you can plan your peel series in peace.

What a fruit acid peel is

Fruit acids belong to the alpha hydroxy acids, AHAs for short. These include glycolic acid, which was originally obtained from sugar cane, lactic acid, mandelic acid and citric acid. In the skin, they loosen the bonds between the dead cells of the horny layer, the outermost layer of skin. The flakes loosen, the surface can become smoother, and the skin is stimulated to form new cells. In a medical peel, the acid is more highly concentrated than in skincare products for home use and acts only briefly and in a controlled way. That is why careful skin consultation and medical information come at the start of treatment.

Fruit acid peel and chemical peel

A fruit acid peel is a form of chemical peel. Chemical peels are classified by how deeply they penetrate: superficial peels with fruit acids act in the horny layer and the upper layers of the epidermis. Medium and deep peels with other acids reach deeper into the skin, take considerably longer to recover from and carry higher risks, such as scarring and lasting pigment disorders. The fruit acid peel is one of the mild procedures: usually the skin is only briefly red afterwards, and you can soon return to your daily routine. In return, several treatments are generally needed before the skin's appearance visibly changes.

Refining the skin's appearance

The aim of a fruit acid peel is to refine the skin's appearance and stimulate skin renewal. Because dead skin flakes loosen, the complexion often looks fresher and skincare can be absorbed better. Over a series, the stimulated cell renewal is intended to help make pores look finer, reduce mild blemishes and lighten superficial pigment spots. Deep wrinkles, scars or slack skin, on the other hand, can hardly be influenced by a superficial peel – other procedures such as hyaluronic acid come into question here. How clearly your skin changes is individual and depends on skin type, starting point and skincare.

Side effects and aftercare

During the exposure time, tingling, warmth or a slight burning sensation are normal. Afterwards the skin may be red and feel tight for a while and flake slightly over the following days. Unusual but possible are crusts, irritation, a flare-up of cold sores or pigment changes – especially with darker skin or sun exposure after treatment. Consistent sun protection with a high sun protection factor is therefore important in the weeks afterwards. Avoid saunas, sunbeds, further peels and irritating cosmetics for a few days. Contact us if your skin reacts strongly.

Skincare without fragrances

Freshly peeled skin is particularly sensitive to fragrances. Our practice is nicotine-free and perfume-free, because fragrances can trigger allergies, headaches and dizziness and are suspected of placing a strain on the hormonal and immune systems. Prof. Schulte-Uebbing has addressed fragrances and plasticisers (phthalates) in perfume and cosmetics in lectures and publications; as so-called endocrine disruptors, they can act in a hormone-like way. Mild, fragrance-free products are therefore suitable for aftercare following the peel. If you wish, we are also happy to talk with you about the ingredients in your daily skincare.

Good questions. Clear answers.

Frequently asked questions about fruit acid peels

Can't find your question? Give us a call – we will take the time.

How many treatments are needed?

That varies. A single peel can make the complexion look fresher; for pores, blemishes or pigment spots, a series of several treatments at intervals usually makes sense. How many you will need depends on skin type, concern and tolerance. Afterwards, occasional top-ups can help care for the skin's appearance.

Is a fruit acid peel uncomfortable?

While the acid is working, you usually feel tingling, warmth or a slight burning sensation, which many women describe as easy to tolerate. Tell us if it becomes too strong – then we neutralise the acid earlier. Afterwards the skin may be red and feel tight for a while.

Can I go to work afterwards?

Usually yes. After a superficial fruit acid peel the skin is often only briefly red; in the following days it may flake slightly. Leave make-up off on the day of treatment if possible. If you have an important appointment, schedule the peel some time before it.

How do I prepare my skin?

In the days before treatment, please avoid other peels, hair removal on the face and strong sun or sunbeds. If you use acne medication or creams containing vitamin A derivatives, please tell us beforehand – they can make the skin more sensitive. We will discuss everything else in the consultation.

When in the year does a peel make sense?

Autumn and winter are well suited, when the sun is less strong. In principle, a fruit acid peel is possible all year round if you use sun protection consistently afterwards and avoid sunbathing. You should not begin a peel series directly before a sunshine holiday.

Is a fruit acid peel possible during pregnancy?

During pregnancy and breastfeeding, we generally postpone aesthetic treatments or weigh them up very carefully. Because of hormones, the skin reacts more sensitively during this time and is prone to pigment spots. If you notice skin changes during pregnancy, please feel free to talk to us as a gynaecology practice; we will discuss what makes sense now.

Can a fruit acid peel help with blemishes?

For a slight tendency towards blemishes and blackheads, a fruit acid peel can be used as a supportive measure. Inflammatory or pronounced acne, however, belongs in dermatological treatment. In women, blemished skin can also have hormonal causes, such as PCOS – as a gynaecology practice, we can investigate that.

Does health insurance cover the costs?

Generally not. A fruit acid peel is an aesthetic treatment and therefore a self-pay service, including for patients with private health insurance. We bill according to the German fee schedule for doctors (GOÄ) and tell you before the treatment what costs will arise. You can book appointments on 089 299655 or online via Doctolib.
