Open questions about ozone therapy

You have heard of ozone therapy and would like to know whether it makes sense for you – and where its limits lie.

Our approach

Our approach to ozone-oxygen therapy

Before we recommend ozone-oxygen therapy, we assess your symptoms from a conventional medical perspective. We also check whether anything speaks against it – for example an overactive thyroid or favism, a rare enzyme deficiency of the red blood cells. In our practice, we work with ozone therapy according to Dr. Hänsler. The method is based on the idea that a precisely measured, small amount of ozone sets a mild stimulus to which the body responds with adaptive reactions. The aim is to support metabolism, circulation and general wellbeing. At our practice, ozone therapy is always part of an individual overall plan.

An honest assessment

Ozone-oxygen therapy complements guideline-based diagnosis and treatment; it does not replace them. Its effectiveness has not been sufficiently proven scientifically, which is why we discuss openly whether it makes sense for you.

Careful and personal

What ozone-oxygen therapy involves

01

Medical ozone

A mixture of pure oxygen and a small proportion of ozone is used. A medical device produces it immediately before use.

02

Major autologous blood treatment

The most familiar form of application: a little blood is taken from a vein, enriched with the mixture outside the body and returned through the same vein.

03

Other forms of application

There is also, for example, minor autologous blood treatment as an injection into a muscle, and local applications. We will discuss which form may be suitable for you.

04

Safety first

Ozone is not inhaled and is not given as a gas directly into the bloodstream. Beforehand, we check for contraindications and review your medication.

05

Part of your overall plan

Ozone therapy can be combined with infusions, intravenous laser therapy or acupuncture – coordinated with your conventional medical treatment.

Who ozone-oxygen therapy may be suitable for

What may speak in favour

  • If you would like complementary support for your metabolism and circulation
  • As one building block of a holistic treatment concept
  • After a conventional medical assessment of your symptoms
  • If there are no contraindications such as favism

When a different approach is needed

Ozone-oxygen therapy is not suitable, or only after careful assessment, during pregnancy, with an overactive thyroid, favism, clotting disorders or after a recent heart attack. If you have sudden severe symptoms, contact the on-call medical service on 116 117, or call 112 in an emergency.

In four steps

What happens during ozone-oxygen therapy

  1. Book an appointment

Call us on 089 299655 or book online via Doctolib. Our practice is at Residenzstraße 9, near Marienplatz and Odeonsplatz.

  2. Conversation and examination

We take time for your medical history, your symptoms and your medication, and check whether there are contraindications – including laboratory tests where needed.

  3. Treatment plan

Together we decide whether ozone therapy makes sense for you, which form of application suits you and how often you will be treated.

  4. Treatment and support

You lie or sit comfortably, much as you would for an infusion. As treatment goes on, we discuss how you are feeling and adjust the treatment.

Transparent from the start

Costs and health insurance

Ozone-oxygen therapy is not among the services covered by statutory health insurance (GKV). It is a self-pay service charged under the German fee schedule for doctors (GOÄ). Private health insurance and Beihilfe (the state healthcare subsidy for civil servants) reimburse it in part or not at all, depending on the plan and the reason for treatment. We will tell you before treatment what costs to expect and discuss with you how many appointments may make sense.

The background in detail – click to expand.

What medical ozone is

Ozone is a molecule made of three oxygen atoms. We know it from summer smog, where it irritates the airways at higher concentrations. That is why ozone is never inhaled in medicine. For ozone-oxygen therapy, a medical device produces a mixture from pure oxygen that contains only a small proportion of ozone. The amount is precisely measured. Ozone does not keep for long and breaks down into oxygen again, so it is produced immediately before use. The medical use of ozone has a long tradition in naturopathy in Germany. In our practice, we work with ozone therapy according to Dr. Hänsler.

The concept behind it

Ozone-oxygen therapy is based on the idea that a small, precisely measured amount of ozone sets a mild oxidative stimulus. The body is expected to respond to this stimulus with adaptive reactions, for example by stepping up its own protective systems against oxidative stress. It is also assumed that oxygen utilisation, the flow properties of the blood and the immune system can be influenced. The aim is to support metabolism, circulation and general wellbeing. For these mechanisms there is mainly laboratory research. For most applications, meaningful studies in humans are lacking. Its effectiveness has therefore not been sufficiently proven scientifically. We tell you this openly before you decide.

Forms of application

The most familiar form is major autologous blood treatment. A little blood is taken from a vein, enriched with the ozone-oxygen mixture in a sterile container and returned through the same vein. In minor autologous blood treatment, a small amount of blood is mixed with the mixture and injected into a muscle. There are also local applications, for example on the skin or as an injection into muscles and near joints, as well as administration via the rectum. Which form is suitable in your situation depends on your concern and your state of health. We will discuss this together as part of your treatment plan.

Safety and contraindications

In medicine, ozone is not inhaled. Nor is it injected as a gas directly into a vein – this earlier method is considered unacceptable because of the risk of gas embolism. In autologous blood treatment, the mixture is added to the blood outside the body. Ozone therapy is not suitable for people with favism, an inherited enzyme deficiency of the red blood cells. Caution applies with an overactive thyroid, clotting disorders, after a recent heart attack and during pregnancy. Possible side effects are a bruise at the injection site or a brief feeling of weakness. Please tell us about all your medication beforehand, especially blood thinners.

Ozone in a holistic approach

In our practice, ozone-oxygen therapy is never a stand-alone measure. It can be one building block once the conventional medical assessment has been completed and there are no contraindications. Exhaustion or circulation problems can have very different causes, from hormonal disorders and nutrient deficiencies to vascular disease. We clarify these causes first, together with specialists where necessary. Depending on your concern, we combine it with infusions, intravenous laser therapy or acupuncture. The foundation remains our practice principle: a detailed medical history, individual treatment plans and personal care. Our aim is to support the immune, hormone and nervous systems, metabolism and mind equally. Whether ozone therapy is right for you in this context, we decide together.

Good questions. Clear answers.

Frequently asked questions about ozone-oxygen therapy

Can't find your question? Give us a call – we will take the time.

Isn't ozone toxic?

When inhaled, ozone irritates the airways, which is why it is never inhaled in medicine. Ozone-oxygen therapy uses a precisely measured mixture with only a small proportion of ozone, and it is not given as a gas into a vein. Beforehand, we check whether anything speaks against it in your case.

What happens during an autologous blood treatment?

As with a blood test, a cannula is placed in a vein in your arm. A little blood flows into a sterile container, where it is enriched with the ozone-oxygen mixture, and is then returned through the same cannula. You lie or sit comfortably throughout.

Does ozone therapy have side effects?

Possible effects are a bruise at the injection site, a brief feeling of weakness or circulatory problems. Serious complications are rare when the treatment is carried out properly. That is why we first check for contraindications such as favism or an overactive thyroid and ask about your medication.

How often is treatment given?

That depends on your concern and the form of application. Ozone-oxygen therapy is usually planned as a series of several treatments. We decide together how many appointments make sense. As treatment goes on, we discuss how you are doing.

Does health insurance cover the costs?

Statutory health insurance (GKV) does not cover ozone-oxygen therapy. It is a self-pay service charged under the German fee schedule for doctors (GOÄ). Private insurers and Beihilfe (the state healthcare subsidy for civil servants) reimburse it in part or not at all, depending on the plan. We will tell you before treatment what costs to expect.

Can I combine ozone therapy with other treatments?

Yes, this is often possible, for example with infusions, intravenous laser therapy or acupuncture. It is important that we know all your medication and dietary supplements. We agree the order and intervals of the treatments individually.

Is ozone therapy possible during pregnancy?

Ozone-oxygen therapy is generally not used during pregnancy because there is no safety data for mother and child. Please always tell us if you are pregnant or might be. Together we will consider what options are suitable for you during this time.
