When to come to us

When neural therapy comes up

Long-lasting pain

Your back, neck, head or lower abdomen have hurt for a long time, and you would like a complement to your current treatment.

Symptoms at scars

A surgical scar, for example after a caesarean section, is causing you symptoms, and you want to know what you can do.

Painful periods

Your period is painful every month. After a gynaecological assessment, you would like to find out about complementary options.

Questions about “interference fields”

You have heard of interference fields and would like to find out, medically and honestly, what is behind this concept.

Our approach

Our approach to neural therapy

The starting point is not the syringe but the question of the cause. We take time for your history, examine you thoroughly and check what needs to be assessed and treated from a conventional medical standpoint. Only then do we discuss whether neural therapy fits as a complement. We use it as one building block of an individual treatment concept, if appropriate together with other methods at our practice such as acupuncture. The aim is holistic support – with a view to body, soul and mind.

An honest assessment

Neural therapy complements guideline-based treatment but does not replace it; its effectiveness is not proven for every application, and the “interference field” concept has not been demonstrated – we discuss openly what makes sense for you.

Careful and personal

What neural therapy involves

01

Detailed initial consultation

We discuss your symptoms, pre-existing conditions and medication. Blood-thinning medication and earlier reactions to anaesthetics, for example at the dentist, are important.

02

Thorough examination

Depending on your symptoms, we examine you physically and gynaecologically, including with ultrasound. This way we recognise what should be assessed first from a conventional medical perspective.

03

Wheals in the skin

With a very fine needle, we place small depots of the anaesthetic into the uppermost layer of the skin. This creates small raised areas, known as wheals.

04

Targeted injections

Depending on the approach, we also inject at painful muscle points or along scars. We discuss beforehand with you which sites are an option in your case.

05

A short rest afterwards

After the injections you stay in the practice for a moment. This allows circulatory reactions to be noticed in good time.

06

Integration into your plan

Neural therapy is one building block. We coordinate it with the rest of your treatment and check together with you whether it does you good.

Is this right for me?

Who neural therapy may be suitable for

What may speak in favour

  • Your symptoms have been medically assessed
  • You would like a complement to your current treatment
  • You have long-lasting pain or scar-related symptoms
  • You tolerate local anaesthetics

When a different approach is needed

With intolerance of anaesthetics, clotting disorders, blood-thinning medication, inflammation at the injection site and during pregnancy, neural therapy is often not an option. For acute severe pain, heavy bleeding or fever, contact the medical on-call service on 116 117, in an emergency call 112.

In four steps

How neural therapy works

  1. Book an appointment

Call us on 089 299655 or book online via Doctolib. Our practice is in Munich's old town, at Residenzstraße 9.

  2. Conversation and examination

We take time for your history and examine you thoroughly. Previous findings, operation reports and your medication list help us with this.

  3. Treatment plan

We discuss whether neural therapy fits as a complement, how it works and what risks it carries. The decision is yours.

  4. Treatment and support

The injections are given calmly at our practice. Afterwards we discuss how you are doing and what happens next.

Transparent from the start

Costs and health insurance

Neural therapy is generally not among the services covered by statutory health insurance (GKV). It is usually a self-pay service under the German fee schedule for physicians (GOÄ). Whether your private health insurance or Beihilfe (the state health allowance for civil servants) covers the costs depends on your plan. We bill the medical assessment of your symptoms depending on your insurance status. We will tell you before the treatment what costs to expect.

The background in detail – click to expand.

What is neural therapy?

Neural therapy is a method of experience-based medicine. A local anaesthetic, such as is also used at the dentist, is injected deliberately into certain areas of the body. The method goes back to the doctors Ferdinand and Walter Huneke, who described it in the first half of the 20th century. Two approaches are distinguished. In segmental therapy, treatment is given where the symptoms occur, or in the area of skin that is connected via nerve pathways to the affected organ. In interference field therapy, injections are given at sites that, according to the concept of neural therapy, count as possible interference fields, for example at scars. Neural therapy is to be distinguished from the local anaesthesia before a procedure, even though similar agents are used.

The concept of interference fields

Neural therapy is based on the idea that a permanently irritated area in the body can, via the nervous system, contribute to symptoms elsewhere. Such an area is called an “interference field”. Possible interference fields in this concept include scars, teeth or the tonsils. The anaesthetic is intended to regulate interference fields and stimulate the body's own healing processes. This includes an honest assessment: the interference field concept is an explanatory model and has not been demonstrated scientifically. What is undisputed is that a local anaesthetic temporarily interrupts nerve conduction in the treated area. The evidence for neural therapy as a whole is limited. We explain both to you openly so that you can make a well-informed decision.

Neural therapy in gynaecology

In gynaecological naturopathy, neural therapy is used as a complement, for example for period pain, for lower abdominal symptoms without a clear finding, or for scars after abdominal surgery and caesarean section. A prerequisite is always that causes needing treatment are recognised and treated. These include, for example, endometriosis – tissue similar to the uterine lining outside the uterus –, fibroids, that is, benign nodules of the uterine muscle tissue, or inflammation. Endometriosis is one of our practice's areas of focus. For this reason, thorough assessment comes before any complementary treatment with us. Only once it is clear what is necessary from a conventional medical standpoint do we discuss whether neural therapy can usefully complement your concept.

Possible side effects

Like any injection, neural therapy can have side effects. A brief pain at the injection site, small bruises or temporary numbness are possible. In individual cases there are circulatory reactions such as dizziness, infections at the injection site or allergic reactions to the anaesthetic. Very rarely, nerves or neighbouring structures are injured. For this reason we ask in detail beforehand about pre-existing conditions, medication and earlier reactions to anaesthetics. After the treatment you should stay in the practice for a moment. Contact us if anything seems unusual afterwards.

Neural therapy in the overall concept

At our practice, neural therapy is one building block of the naturopathic methods that Prof. Schulte-Uebbing combines with modern, guideline-based conventional medicine. Depending on your concern, it can be combined with acupuncture and ear acupuncture, mesotherapy or PRP therapy. All of these methods use fine needles but follow different concepts. In acupuncture, nothing is injected. In mesotherapy, small amounts of selected active ingredients are placed into the skin; in PRP, a concentrate from your own blood. Which combination is an option for you depends on your symptoms, your findings and your wishes. We discuss this openly and without promises.

Good questions. Clear answers.

Frequently asked questions about neural therapy

Can't find your question? Give us a call – we will take the time.

Is neural therapy painful?

You feel the prick of a fine needle and briefly a burning sensation until the anaesthetic takes effect. How strongly this is felt varies. If you are afraid of injections, tell us – we proceed gently and take our time.

How often is treatment given?

That is individual and depends on your symptoms and how you feel. We do not promise a fixed number of sessions. After the first treatments, we discuss together whether it makes sense to continue or whether a different path suits you.

Which agent is injected?

A local anaesthetic is used, such as is also used for minor procedures or at the dentist. We discuss which agent we use for you before the treatment, also with a view to possible intolerances.

May I drive afterwards?

After neural therapy, dizziness or numbness can occur. Whether you should drive yourself afterwards, we discuss with you before the treatment. Our practice is easy to reach by U-Bahn and S-Bahn via Marienplatz and Odeonsplatz, a few minutes' walk away.

Is neural therapy possible during pregnancy?

During pregnancy we are particularly cautious with complementary methods. Whether any treatment is an option at all, we decide only after careful consideration and together with you. For acute symptoms during pregnancy, call us or, outside consultation hours, dial 116 117; in an emergency, 112.

Does neural therapy replace other treatments?

No. Neural therapy is a complement. Please do not stop prescribed medication on your own. We coordinate neural therapy with the rest of your treatment and talk openly about what it can and cannot do.

What is the difference from acupuncture?

In acupuncture, fine needles without any active substance are placed at defined points. In neural therapy, a local anaesthetic is injected. We offer both methods. We discuss together which suits your situation.

How do I prepare?

Please bring previous findings, operation reports and a list of your medication. It is essential that you tell us if you take blood-thinning medication or have ever reacted to an anaesthetic. Eat normally beforehand so that your circulation stays stable.
