When to come to us

Signs that may point to endometriosis

Severe period pain

Pain during your period that limits you in everyday life or hardly eases despite painkillers can be a sign of endometriosis.

Pain outside your period too

Pain in the lower abdomen or back, pain during intercourse, bowel movements or urination – often in rhythm with the cycle.

An unfulfilled wish to have a child

Endometriosis can affect fertility. If a pregnancy does not happen, it is worth looking specifically for endometriosis.

A long search without answers

Many women have a long road behind them before the diagnosis is made. We take your symptoms seriously and look closely.

Our approach

Our approach to endometriosis

Endometriosis is a chronic condition with many faces. That is why we begin with a detailed conversation about your symptoms, your cycle and your life plans. The gynaecological examination and an ultrasound follow. For treatment, we use the options of conventional medicine – pain management and hormonal treatment in line with guidelines. If surgery is necessary, we advise you on it and support you before and afterwards. As a complement, we use naturopathic methods, for example acupuncture, ear acupuncture, laser acupuncture according to Dr Weber and phytotherapy. We also take environmental factors and hormonal balance into account. The aim is to ease your symptoms and improve your quality of life.

An honest assessment

Acupuncture, laser acupuncture and other naturopathic methods complement guideline-based treatment but do not replace it – their effectiveness in endometriosis has not been proven for every application, so we openly discuss what is an option for you.

Careful and personal

What the treatment involves

01

Detailed medical history

We ask about the type and timing of your pain, your cycle, bowel and bladder symptoms, any wish to have a child, and previous treatments. A pain diary helps with this.

02

Examination and ultrasound

The gynaecological examination and the ultrasound through the vagina show, for example, endometriosis cysts on the ovaries or changes in the wall of the uterus (adenomyosis).

03

Pain and hormone treatment

Painkillers relieve acute symptoms. Hormonal treatment can slow the growth of the lesions and reduce pain. We choose it to suit your stage of life.

04

Complementary naturopathy

We use acupuncture, ear acupuncture, laser acupuncture according to Dr Weber, intravenous laser therapy and phytotherapy as a complement to conventional medical treatment.

05

Environment and hormonal balance

We take possible exposures into account, for example to hormonally active substances or heavy metals. If metal exposure is confirmed, we discuss detoxification therapy.

06

Surgery and the wish for a child

If a laparoscopy or operation makes sense, we explain the benefits and process and support you before and afterwards. If you are trying to conceive, we plan together.

The background in detail – click to expand.

What is endometriosis?

In endometriosis, tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus. Typical sites are the peritoneum in the pelvis, the ovaries and the ligaments behind the uterus, sometimes also the bowel or bladder. When it grows into the muscular wall of the uterus, this is called adenomyosis. The lesions respond to the hormones of the cycle. They can cause inflammation, adhesions and cysts. Cysts on the ovaries are often filled with old blood, hence the name chocolate cysts. Endometriosis is benign but often takes a chronic course. It is a common condition in women of childbearing age. How severe the symptoms are does not necessarily depend on the extent of the lesions.

Why diagnosis often takes a long time

Many women have a long road behind them before endometriosis is recognised. Period pain is often dismissed as normal, and symptoms vary greatly. Not every lesion is visible on ultrasound. Clues come from the detailed conversation, the physical examination and the vaginal ultrasound. A definitive diagnosis often only comes through keyhole surgery (laparoscopy), in which tissue is taken and examined. With typical symptoms, however, current practice allows hormonal treatment to begin even without prior surgery. A pain and cycle diary helps to recognise patterns. Please feel free to bring it to your appointment.

Treatment options

Treatment depends on your symptoms, your age and any wish to have a child. Anti-inflammatory painkillers relieve acute symptoms. Hormonal treatments, for example with progestins – hormones similar to the one produced by the corpus luteum – can dampen the growth of the lesions and reduce pain. For cysts, adhesions or when you are trying to conceive, keyhole surgery (laparoscopy) may make sense. Because endometriosis can recur, longer-term support is often necessary. Many women also want approaches that involve the whole person: exercise, warmth, relaxation, nutrition and naturopathic methods. We see these as a complement, not a replacement.

Endometriosis, hormones and the environment

Endometriosis is an oestrogen-dependent condition: the lesions grow under the influence of oestrogen. An imbalance between oestrogen and progesterone can therefore play a role. For many years, Prof. Dr. Schulte-Uebbing has been looking into how environmental factors influence this balance. Some substances in the environment act in a hormone-like way; they are called endocrine disruptors. These include certain plasticisers and heavy metals. On this topic he has published, among others, “Advanced endometriosis – the role of endocrine disruptors and inflammation” (umwelt medizin gesellschaft, 2011). Another article is “Endometriosis and environmental factors” (Gesundheit Hessen, 2013). At the consultation, we include such factors in the assessment.

Integrative therapy and research

Prof. Dr. Schulte-Uebbing has described in several specialist articles how acupuncture and laser therapy can be integrated into a holistic concept. These include “A holistic treatment concept for endometriosis including traditional Chinese acupuncture, ear acupuncture and phytotherapy” (journal of physicians for naturopathy, 2013). Likewise “Integrative therapy of endometriosis: laser acupuncture and intravenous laser therapy” (ZAA, 2014). In 2024 he published several articles on PLACU therapy (Platelet Acupuncture Therapy) in the Journal of Applied Complementary Medicine, one of them on endometriosis. These methods belong to complementary medicine. Their effectiveness has not been proven in large studies. Whether they are an option for you, we discuss openly.

Good questions. Clear answers.

Frequently asked questions about endometriosis

Can't find your question? Give us a call – we will take the time.

How is endometriosis diagnosed?

It begins with a detailed conversation, the gynaecological examination and an ultrasound through the vagina. These can reveal many clues, such as cysts on the ovaries. A definitive diagnosis often only comes through laparoscopy. With typical symptoms, however, treatment can begin even without prior surgery.

Is endometriosis curable?

Endometriosis is a chronic condition that can recur. With suitable treatment, however, symptoms can often be eased. After the menopause they become milder in many women, because oestrogen levels fall. The aim of our treatment is to reduce your pain and improve your quality of life.

Can I get pregnant with endometriosis?

Yes, many women with endometriosis become pregnant – some naturally, others with support. However, endometriosis can affect fertility, for example through adhesions or inflammation. When you are trying to conceive, we therefore plan treatment especially carefully. We also take other factors such as hormones and the thyroid into account.

Will I need surgery?

Not necessarily. Often the symptoms can be treated with pain and hormone treatment. Keyhole surgery can make sense, for example for larger cysts, severe symptoms despite treatment, or when you are trying to conceive. We advise you in detail on benefits and risks and support you before and after a procedure.

Does acupuncture help with endometriosis?

Acupuncture, ear acupuncture and laser acupuncture are used as a complement, with the aim of positively influencing pain and well-being. Their effectiveness has not been conclusively proven scientifically. Prof. Dr. Schulte-Uebbing is a lecturer of the German Medical Acupuncture Association (DÄGfA) and has published on acupuncture in endometriosis. Whether a trial makes sense for you, we discuss together.

What can I do myself?

Many women find warmth, regular exercise and relaxation soothing. A pain and cycle diary helps you and us to recognise patterns. Some women pay attention to an anti-inflammatory diet. Talk to us: we discuss with you what is practicable in your everyday life and sensibly complements your treatment.

Does the environment play a role?

The causes of endometriosis are not fully understood. Hormonal, inflammatory, hereditary and environmental factors, among others, are discussed. For many years, Prof. Dr. Schulte-Uebbing has been working on hormonally active substances and heavy metals. We include such factors in the assessment where it makes sense for you.

Does health insurance cover the costs?

Your statutory health insurance (GKV) covers diagnostics and guideline-based treatment. Complementary methods such as acupuncture, laser acupuncture or intravenous laser therapy are generally self-pay services for endometriosis, charged under the German medical fee schedule (GOÄ). Private health insurers reimburse depending on the plan. We will tell you beforehand what costs will arise.
