When to come to us

How you may notice Hashimoto's

Tiredness and exhaustion

You are permanently tired, feel the cold easily, gain weight or lose hair – even though little has changed in your everyday life.

Cycle and hormones

Your period is irregular or very heavy, you have intermenstrual bleeding or symptoms before your period that have increased.

Fertility

You would like to have a child and want to know whether your thyroid and your hormones are well controlled.

A diagnosis without answers

Hashimoto's is known, but the symptoms remain. You are looking for someone who considers the thyroid, hormones and life circumstances together.

Our approach

Our approach to Hashimoto's disease

Hashimoto's disease is an autoimmune disease: the immune system turns against the body's own thyroid. From a gynaecological point of view, we are interested in how this connects with your cycle, your sex hormones and your wish for a child. We investigate thoroughly first: thyroid levels, antibodies, hormone status and micronutrients such as vitamin D. Guideline-based treatment of the thyroid remains the basis. As a complement, we look at the balance of oestrogen and progesterone, possible environmental exposures and your lifestyle. Our aim is to strengthen the immune, hormonal and nervous systems, metabolism and the psyche equally.

An honest assessment

We see naturopathic methods such as acupuncture or intravenous laser therapy as a complement to guideline-based treatment, not a replacement; their effectiveness has not been scientifically proven for every application, and we discuss openly what makes sense for you.

Careful and personal

What support for Hashimoto's involves

01

Detailed first consultation

We ask about symptoms, cycle, pregnancies, medication, diet and possible environmental exposures – and we listen.

02

Laboratory and hormone analysis

Thyroid levels and antibodies, sex hormones at the right point in the cycle, vitamin D and other micronutrients – if needed also through a private laboratory.

03

Hormones in balance

If there is a progesterone deficiency or an excess of oestrogens, we discuss natural hormone therapy with bioidentical progesterone.

04

Acupuncture and phytotherapy

We use acupuncture, ear acupuncture and medicinal plants as a complement. The aim is to support your well-being and your hormonal balance.

05

Intravenous laser therapy

Laser light is delivered into a vein through a fine needle. Prof. Schulte-Uebbing has described the method in autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto's.

06

Trying to conceive and pregnancy

When you are trying to conceive, we pay particular attention to well-controlled thyroid levels and to progesterone, and we support you along the way.

From research

Prof. Schulte-Uebbing has published on this.

Over more than four decades, more than 400 scientific publications have been written – on gynaecology, oncology, environmental medicine, hormones, immunology and naturopathy. This knowledge informs every consultation with your gynaecologist in Munich.

Who support for Hashimoto's may be suitable for

What may speak in favour

  • Women with confirmed or suspected Hashimoto's thyroiditis
  • Persistent tiredness despite stable thyroid levels
  • Cycle disorders or menopausal symptoms with a thyroid condition
  • Wish for a child with Hashimoto's or an underactive thyroid
  • A wish for conventional medicine and naturopathy all in one place

When a different approach is needed

What is Hashimoto's disease?

Hashimoto's disease, also called Hashimoto's thyroiditis, is a chronic inflammation of the thyroid. The immune system produces antibodies against the body's own thyroid tissue. Women are mainly affected. The course is usually gradual: at the start the thyroid may briefly release too many hormones, later an underactive thyroid often develops. Typical then are tiredness, sensitivity to cold, weight gain, dry skin, hair loss, constipation and low mood. Hashimoto's is diagnosed through blood tests – the controlling hormone TSH, the free thyroid hormones and specific antibodies – and through an ultrasound of the thyroid. Because the symptoms are so non-specific, the condition is easily overlooked. Prof. Schulte-Uebbing pointed this out early, for example in “Depressive moods, tiredness, reduced performance – Hashimoto's disease: an often overlooked important (partial) cause” (gyn, 2014) and “Hashimoto's disease – the new widespread disease?” (Your Health magazine, 2012).

Thyroid and female hormones

The thyroid and ovaries work closely together. Thyroid hormones influence ovulation, the luteal phase and thus the production of progesterone. An underactive thyroid can therefore contribute to irregular or heavy bleeding, intermenstrual bleeding and symptoms before the period. Conversely, sex hormones influence the need for thyroid hormone. For many years, Prof. Schulte-Uebbing has been working on the interplay of Hashimoto's, progesterone deficiency and oestrogen dominance – that is, an excess of oestrogens in relation to progesterone. Publications on this include “Hashimoto's thyroiditis, oestrogen dominance and progesterone deficiency” (ZAEN, 2012) and “Hashimoto's disease and progesterone deficiency” (Liv Vivendi, 2013). Oestrogen dominance is not a diagnosis in its own right in conventional medicine but an explanatory model. It helps us to understand symptoms in context and to weigh up natural hormone therapy in a targeted way.

Hashimoto's, trying to conceive and pregnancy

For ovulation, implantation and early pregnancy, the body needs enough thyroid hormone. In pregnancy, the need rises further. Women with Hashimoto's who want to have a child should therefore have their levels checked early and monitored closely during pregnancy. A well-controlled thyroid is an important precondition, but it does not mean that a pregnancy will happen. Prof. Schulte-Uebbing has described this connection, among others, in “Unfulfilled wish to have a child and Hashimoto's disease. The thyroid disorder is a frequently underestimated (partial) cause” (CO’MED, 2013). When you wish to have a child, we therefore look at the thyroid, cycle, progesterone and vitamin D together. You can read more on our page about support when trying to conceive.

Vitamin D, environment and lifestyle

Vitamin D acts like a hormone in the body and plays a role in the immune system. In autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto's, a deficiency is often observed; whether correcting it influences the course is still being researched. We measure the vitamin D level and correct a deficiency in a targeted way. One publication on this is “Hashimoto's thyroiditis – a vitamin D3 and progesterone deficiency disease?” (Microtrace Minerals newsletter, 2013). A further research field of Prof. Schulte-Uebbing is endocrine disruptors – hormone-like substances from plastics, fragrances or drinking water, described for example in “Is Hashimoto's thyroiditis promoted by endocrine disruptors (ED) in drinking water?” (CO’Med, 2017). That is also one reason why our practice is nicotine-free and perfume-free. Sleep, stress, exercise and a balanced diet also count. There are no established recommendations for every question here; we discuss what makes sense for you.

Acupuncture, phytotherapy and intravenous laser

Alongside conventional medical treatment, we offer naturopathic methods. Acupuncture is based on the idea in Traditional Chinese Medicine that vital energy flows along channels and can be influenced through certain points. Phytotherapy uses medicinal plants. In intravenous laser therapy, laser light is delivered into a vein through a fine needle; the method is based on the idea that light stimulates metabolism and immune cells. Prof. Schulte-Uebbing has described these methods in Hashimoto's, for example in “Acupuncture, ear acupuncture and phytotherapy for the treatment of Hashimoto's disease” (ZAA, 2015) and “An integrative treatment concept for autoimmune diseases, using Hashimoto's disease as an example” (CO’MED, 2015). These methods do not replace thyroid treatment. Their effectiveness has not been sufficiently proven scientifically. Whether they are an option for you, we discuss openly.

Frequently asked questions about Hashimoto's disease

Can't find your question? Give us a call – we will take the time.

Is a gynaecology practice the right place to go for Hashimoto's?

The thyroid influences the cycle, fertility, pregnancy and the menopause. That is why a gynaecologist's perspective is often helpful. We look at the thyroid and sex hormones together. If you are already under the care of your GP or an endocrinologist, we do not replace that care but complement it – and, if you wish, coordinate with your doctors.

Do I still need thyroid hormones?

If the thyroid is underactive, replacing the missing thyroid hormones is the guideline-based treatment. Naturopathic methods can complement it but not replace it. Please never stop prescribed medication on your own or change the dose yourself. We check together whether your current dose suits your symptoms and stage of life.

Can Hashimoto's affect my plans to have a child?

An underactive thyroid that is not adequately treated can affect the cycle, ovulation and early pregnancy. When you are trying to conceive, we therefore check the thyroid levels carefully, pay attention to progesterone and vitamin D and talk about monitoring during pregnancy. The need for thyroid hormone then rises, and the levels should be monitored closely.

What does progesterone have to do with Hashimoto's?

The thyroid and ovaries influence each other. With an underactive thyroid, the corpus luteum may produce less progesterone. Prof. Schulte-Uebbing has described this connection in several specialist articles. Whether you have a progesterone deficiency is shown by a hormone analysis at the right point in the cycle. Afterwards we discuss whether natural hormone therapy with bioidentical progesterone makes sense.

Is there a diet that helps with Hashimoto's?

There is no diet that makes Hashimoto's go away. What makes sense is a balanced, fresh diet, enough vitamin D and a good supply of micronutrients such as selenium and iron. Laboratory values show whether you are lacking anything. You should avoid very high amounts of iodine, for example from seaweed supplements, or discuss them with us beforehand.

Does health insurance cover the costs?

Statutory and private health insurers cover the investigation of the thyroid and hormones when there is a medical reason. Extended laboratory tests, acupuncture, infusions and intravenous laser therapy are mostly self-pay services under the German medical fee schedule (GOÄ). We will tell you beforehand what costs will arise.

How often should the levels be checked?

That depends on whether you have an underactive thyroid, how stable your levels are and which stage of life you are in. After a change in treatment, when trying to conceive, during pregnancy and in the menopause, more frequent checks make sense. We set the right rhythm together.

Are my symptoms caused by Hashimoto's or by the menopause?

Tiredness, sleep problems, mood swings and weight gain occur in both. That is why it is worth checking the thyroid and sex hormones together. This makes it easier to tell what belongs to what – and treatment can take both into account.
