Your practice for environment-related illnesses.
Many symptoms have more than one cause. Pollutants from everyday life and the environment, fragrances or metals can play a role – often together with hormones and the immune system. Prof. Dr. Schulte-Uebbing has worked in environmental medicine for over 30 years. We take time, look for connections and support you holistically.

Environmental medicine in Munich
At a glance
In 1994, Prof. Dr. Claus Schulte-Uebbing opened his practice for environmental medicine in Munich – to our knowledge, the first in the city. Since then, environment-related illnesses have been among our areas of focus, alongside gynaecology, endometriosis and oncology. Environmental medicine asks how substances from everyday life and the environment affect health: for example plasticisers, fragrances, metals or hormonally active substances in drinking water. We clarify whether such exposures may play a role in your symptoms. In doing so we look at immune, hormonal and metabolic disorders, at toxic burdens and at detoxification capacity. This means how well your body can break down and excrete pollutants. From this comes an individual treatment plan that combines conventional medicine and naturopathy.
Prof. Schulte-Uebbing also pursues the field in research and teaching. As early as the late 1980s, together with the environmental physician Prof. Dr. V. Zahn, he gave lectures at TU Munich – for students and for doctors. Together they wrote one of the first textbooks on environmental medicine. Many of his more than 400 publications deal with environmental medicine, endocrinology and immunology. As an immunological practice, we also care for patients with weakened defences and with symptoms after a COVID-19 infection. Our practice is nicotine-free and perfume-free.

View serviceOur approach
We see the person as a whole – body, soul and mind. We begin with a detailed medical history: symptoms, background, living and working environment, diet and skincare products. Targeted laboratory tests, also in a private laboratory, complete the picture. We provide only medically indicated and sensible services. Often the decisive step is to identify and reduce sources of exposure. In addition there is treatment in line with guidelines and, where it fits, naturopathic methods such as detoxification and immunotherapies. Our aim is to strengthen the immune, hormonal and nervous systems, metabolism and psyche equally and bring them into harmony.
We see naturopathic methods such as detoxification or immunotherapies as a complement to diagnostics and treatment in line with guidelines, not as a replacement; their effectiveness has not been scientifically proven for every application, and we discuss openly what makes sense for you.
From research
Over more than four decades, more than 400 scientific publications have been written – on gynaecology, oncology, environmental medicine, hormones, immunology and naturopathy. This knowledge informs every consultation with your gynaecologist in Munich.

The background in detail – click to expand.
Endocrine disruptors are external substances that can interfere with the hormonal system. They mimic hormones, for example, or disrupt their production and breakdown. These include certain plasticisers (phthalates) from plastics and cosmetics, some fragrance additives, pesticides and some metals. We encounter many of these substances every day in small amounts. How strongly they act in an individual case and what role they play in chronic diseases is being intensively researched. Prof. Schulte-Uebbing has addressed this in numerous lectures and articles, for example on phthalates, aluminium and hormonally active substances in drinking water. One example is the lecture “Endocrine Disruptors as Potential Triggers of Chronic Inflammatory Diseases” (11th North German Symposium, German Professional Association of Clinical Environmental Physicians, 2021, in German). For you, this above all means: if you know the typical sources, you can often reduce them in everyday life with simple means.
Our practice is nicotine-free and perfume-free, and there are reasons for this. Perfume and fragrances can trigger allergies, breathlessness, headaches and dizziness in sensitive people. They are also discussed as a possible burden on the immune and hormonal systems. Some fragrance additives contain plasticisers such as phthalates, which are among the endocrine disruptors. Whether such substances – also together with plastic particles or heavy metals – can promote the development of hormone-dependent tumours is an open research question. Prof. Schulte-Uebbing has been studying this for years, including in the article series “Perfume-Free Practice – Why?” (Co.med, 2018 and 2019, in German). For patients who react sensitively to fragrances, a fragrance-free environment is a relief. We therefore ask you to refrain from wearing perfume and strongly scented skincare products to your appointment.
Many questions in environmental medicine affect women in particular ways. Hormonally active substances can interfere with a hormonal balance that already changes greatly over the course of life – in the cycle, pregnancy and the menopause. Prof. Schulte-Uebbing therefore combines gynaecology and environmental medicine. In his work he looks into the question of whether environmental factors could play a role in endometriosis, Hashimoto's disease or hormone-dependent tumours. One example is the series “Environmental Medicine Aspects of Gynaecology” (CO’MED, 2016, in German). Many of these connections have not yet been conclusively clarified. In the consultation, this means: we include possible environmental factors in the assessment without overestimating them, and we treat your symptoms in line with guidelines and holistically.
Heavy metals such as lead, mercury or cadmium, as well as aluminium, are found in the environment, food and some everyday products. At higher exposure, metals can affect nerves, kidneys and the hormonal system. Whether you have a relevant exposure can only be assessed by a careful medical history and targeted laboratory tests – not by symptoms alone. If an exposure is confirmed, we first clarify where it comes from and how it can be avoided. Depending on the findings, detoxification therapy or chelation therapy may then be an option. Prof. Schulte-Uebbing has published on toxic metals, including the chapter “Antidota” in the Handbook of Clinical Metal Toxicology (2016, in German).
As an immunological practice, we also care for patients with weakened defences or frequent infections. In addition there are symptoms after a COVID-19 infection such as chronic exhaustion, lack of drive and tiredness. The immune system is in close exchange with the hormonal and nervous systems. Lack of sleep, stress, nutrient deficiencies and pollutants can place additional strain on its balance. That is why we look at these areas together. We use our immunotherapies – such as immune infusions, acupuncture or intravenous laser therapy – as a complement and tailored to the individual. For Long Covid there is so far no generally recognised causal treatment. The aim is to support you and ease symptoms. You will find more on this on the Immunotherapy and Long Covid pages.

Environmental medicine deals with health disorders that can be triggered or aggravated by substances or influences from the environment. These include indoor pollutants, fragrances, metals or hormonally active substances. The focus is on a thorough medical history, targeted examinations and the question of which exposures can be reduced.
For example, when exhaustion, headaches, skin reactions or breathing difficulties occur in certain rooms or after contact with fragrances. A look at environmental factors can also be worthwhile for long-lasting symptoms without a clear cause, if a metal exposure is suspected or in cases of frequent infections. We clarify in the consultation whether this applies to you.
Yes. We continue to take on new patients. As we take enough time for every woman, we recommend enquiring early, especially for complex concerns or environment-related symptoms. You can make appointments by phone on 089 299655 or online via Doctolib.
Please bring any existing findings, laboratory results and a list of your medications and dietary supplements. Notes on when and where your symptoms occur are also helpful. Please come without perfume and without strongly scented skincare products – our practice is nicotine-free and perfume-free.
Often yes, with simple steps: ventilate regularly, choose perfume-free skincare and cleaning products, do not heat food in plastic and eat a varied diet. Which sources play a role for you depends on your situation. We discuss with you what is sensible and feasible – without unsettling you.
Yes, many women specifically want to avoid unnecessary burdens at that time. The focus is on advice and simple measures in everyday life. Strenuous detoxification procedures are generally not an option during pregnancy and breastfeeding. We advise you gently and factually.
Pollutants, fragrances or metals can promote allergies and inflammatory reactions in some people. We therefore look at the immune system, hormones and environmental factors together. In cases of weakened defences, frequent infections or symptoms after a COVID-19 infection, we offer complementary immunotherapies.
Patients with statutory (GKV) and private health insurance are welcome with us. Billing is made through statutory or private health insurance depending on insurance status. However, many environmental medicine laboratory tests and naturopathic treatments are self-pay services under the German fee schedule for doctors (GOÄ). We will tell you before the treatment what costs will arise.
