Your wish for a child, supported with care and a holistic approach.
When the wish for a child is not fulfilled as quickly as hoped, many women look for causes and for a practice that takes its time. We look at the thyroid, hormones, cycle and lifestyle and complement conventional medicine with acupuncture – with personal support from Prof. Schulte-Uebbing.

When to come to us
You have been trying to get pregnant for some time and would like to know whether there are reasons that can be found and treated.
Your periods are irregular, fail to arrive or are very painful – signs that you should have checked before a pregnancy.
You have a thyroid condition and want your values to be well controlled before and during pregnancy.
You have experienced one or more miscarriages and would like a sensitive assessment of possible causes.
Our approach
Difficulty conceiving rarely has just one cause. That is why we look at the cycle, ovulation, hormones and thyroid together and ask about lifestyle, diet, stress and possible environmental exposures. The foundation is a thorough gynaecological assessment in line with current medical standards. As a complement we offer acupuncture and ear acupuncture – a long-standing focus of Prof. Schulte-Uebbing. We do not carry out assisted reproduction treatments. If one makes sense, we recommend a specialist fertility practice and, if you wish, continue to support you alongside it.
We see acupuncture and other naturopathic methods as a complement to medical assessment and treatment, not a replacement; their effectiveness for fertility has not been clearly demonstrated, and we discuss openly whether they make sense for you.
Careful and personal
Medical history, cycle, previous pregnancies, illnesses, medication, lifestyle and environmental factors – we take time for everything that matters.
On ultrasound we assess the uterus and ovaries. Hormone levels at the right point in the cycle show whether ovulation and the luteal phase work well together.
Thyroid values and antibodies are part of the assessment. If Hashimoto's is known, we pay particular attention to good control before and during pregnancy.
If there is progesterone deficiency, for example, we discuss treatment with bioidentical progesterone – individually tailored and regularly monitored.
Prof. Schulte-Uebbing is a member and lecturer of the DÄGfA. We use acupuncture as a complement, even if you are also being treated at a fertility practice.
We advise on diet, weight, sleep and stress, discuss the recommended folic acid and check vitamin D and other micronutrients.

Is this right for me?
We do not offer insemination, IVF or ICSI; for these we recommend a specialist fertility practice. A urology or andrology practice examines the partner. For severe lower abdominal pain or bleeding in early pregnancy, contact the on-call medical service on 116 117 or, in an emergency, call 112.
In four steps
By phone on 089 299655 or online via Doctolib. Please do bring your cycle calendar, laboratory results and previous findings.
We talk in detail about your situation, examine you gynaecologically with ultrasound and arrange suitable hormone and thyroid tests.
We explain the results clearly and suggest next steps – from hormones and thyroid to acupuncture and referral.
We support you over several cycles, monitor values and adjust the plan if something changes.
Transparent from the start
Patients with statutory (GKV) or private health insurance are warmly welcome at our practice. Statutory health insurers cover the medically necessary assessment of difficulty conceiving. Acupuncture for fertility, extended laboratory tests and micronutrient analyses are generally self-pay services under the German Fee Schedule for Doctors (GOÄ); private insurers reimburse depending on the plan. We will tell you before treatment which costs to expect.

Expertise, clearly explained
The background in detail – click to expand.
We speak of difficulty conceiving when no pregnancy occurs after about a year of regular unprotected intercourse. From the mid-thirties, an earlier assessment makes sense because fertility declines with age. Even with a very irregular cycle, severe period pain, known endometriosis, PCOS, a thyroid condition or after miscarriages, it is worth not waiting long. The causes can lie with the woman, the man or both; often several factors act together. That is why a complete assessment always includes examination of the partner. In women we check the cycle, ovulation, hormones, thyroid and the uterus on ultrasound. Whether the fallopian tubes are open is examined separately if needed.
The thyroid controls metabolism and works closely with the ovaries. Even a mild underactive thyroid or Hashimoto's thyroiditis – a chronic inflammation of the thyroid – can affect the cycle, ovulation and early pregnancy. Among other things, Prof. Schulte-Uebbing has published “Unfulfilled desire to have a child and Hashimoto's disease. The thyroid disorder is a frequently underestimated (partial) cause” (CO’MED, 2013) and “Frequently neglected causes of recurrent miscarriage” (gynäkologie + geburtshilfe, 2013). When you are trying to conceive, we therefore measure thyroid values and antibodies and make sure they are well controlled before and during pregnancy. During pregnancy the need for thyroid hormone rises; regular checks are then important. A well-controlled thyroid is an important precondition, but it does not by itself ensure a pregnancy.
For a pregnancy, ovulation and the luteal phase have to work well together. After ovulation, the corpus luteum produces progesterone. It prepares the uterine lining for implantation and supports early pregnancy. If the luteal phase is shortened or progesterone production is too low, this is called corpus luteum insufficiency. Prof. Schulte-Uebbing describes progesterone as a key hormone in women, for example in “Progesterone – the all-rounder hormone” (Liv, 2012). An imbalance between oestrogen and progesterone, PCOS – polycystic ovary syndrome – or endometriosis can also affect fertility. We measure the hormones at the right point in the cycle and discuss whether natural hormone therapy with bioidentical progesterone is suitable for you.
Acupuncture and ear acupuncture have been among the main areas of focus of our practice for decades, including as a complement when you are trying to conceive. The method is based on the idea in Traditional Chinese Medicine that body functions can be regulated via certain points. The aim is to support the cycle, relaxation and well-being. Prof. Schulte-Uebbing is a member and lecturer of the German Medical Acupuncture Association (DÄGfA). Together with E. Seiler he wrote the textbook “Acupuncture for Pregnancy, Birth and the Postpartum Period” (Pschyrembel/De Gruyter, 2000; new edition Gesund Media, 2018), as well as the chapter “Ear Acupuncture in Obstetrics” (Thieme, 2010). The evidence from studies on acupuncture for fertility is not consistent. We therefore use it as a complement and do not promise a pregnancy.
Many factors that you can influence yourself affect the fertility of women and men: smoking, alcohol, being significantly overweight or underweight, lack of sleep and lasting stress. Women are advised to take folic acid before a pregnancy. We also check vitamin D, iron and other micronutrients and correct a deficiency in a targeted way. One research focus of Prof. Schulte-Uebbing is endocrine disruptors – substances from plastics, cosmetics, fragrances or drinking water that can act like hormones in the body. One related publication is “Hormonally active substances in drinking water and their effects on the female hormonal system.” (gyn, 2018). How strongly such substances affect fertility has not yet been conclusively established. Less exposure in everyday life, however, is a step you can take yourself.
Sometimes balancing hormones and thyroid is not enough. Reproductive medicine treatment may then make sense: an insemination, in which prepared sperm cells are placed in the uterus, or assisted fertilisation outside the body (IVF or ICSI). These procedures are offered by specialist fertility practices and centres, not by our practice. We tell you openly when this route makes sense and recommend that you go and be assessed there. If you wish, we continue to support you in parallel, for example with acupuncture, getting your thyroid well controlled or conversations – in consultation with your fertility practice. Under certain conditions, statutory health insurers contribute to the cost of such treatment.
Good questions. Clear answers.

No. We are a gynaecology practice with a holistic focus. We investigate causes, treat hormonal and thyroid disorders and also offer acupuncture as a complement. We do not carry out insemination, IVF or ICSI. If they make sense, we recommend a specialist fertility practice and, if you wish, continue to support you alongside it.
As a rule, when no pregnancy has occurred after about a year of regular unprotected intercourse. From the mid-thirties, with a very irregular cycle, known endometriosis, PCOS, a thyroid condition or after miscarriages, an earlier assessment makes sense. You are also welcome to come sooner if you would like to prepare well.
We cannot promise that. Acupuncture is used as a complement to support the cycle, relaxation and well-being. The evidence from studies is not consistent. Prof. Schulte-Uebbing is an acupuncture lecturer at the DÄGfA and a textbook author. Whether acupuncture is suitable for you, we discuss openly – as a complement to medical assessment, not as a replacement.
He is very welcome, because trying for a child concerns you both. The causes can also lie with the man. His examination, such as a semen analysis, is carried out by a urology or andrology practice. We are glad to discuss questions about lifestyle, diet and environmental exposures with you together.
Thyroid hormones influence ovulation, the luteal phase and early pregnancy. An undetected underactive thyroid or Hashimoto's thyroiditis can make it harder to conceive. Prof. Schulte-Uebbing has worked extensively on this connection scientifically. That is why we check values and antibodies and make sure they are well controlled.
Statutory health insurers cover the medically necessary assessment of difficulty conceiving. Acupuncture and extended hormone and micronutrient analyses are mostly self-pay services under the German Fee Schedule for Doctors (GOÄ). Under certain conditions, statutory insurers contribute to later fertility treatment. We will tell you beforehand which costs arise at our practice.
Yes, as a complement this is possible. Acupuncture, getting your thyroid well controlled or conversations can accompany treatment at a fertility practice. We always coordinate medication, hormones and infusions with your fertility practice so that nothing overlaps.
Take the recommended folic acid, give up smoking and, if possible, alcohol, and make sure you get enough sleep and exercise. A healthy weight supports a regular cycle. Many women also reduce fragrances and plastics in everyday life. We discuss in person which steps make sense for you.
