When to come to us

When immune infusions may be an option for you

Frequent infections

You catch colds often, infections drag on, and you would like the reasons thoroughly investigated.

After illness or surgery

An illness or procedure has weakened you, and you would like medically supported help with your recovery.

As a complement in cancer care

You are being treated for cancer or are in aftercare and would like complementary support.

Long Covid

Since a coronavirus infection you suffer from exhaustion, lack of drive or a feeling that your defences are weakened.

Our approach

Our approach to immune infusions

As an immunological practice, we look at your immune system in connection with hormones, metabolism, nervous system and psyche. We begin with a detailed conversation and, if needed, laboratory tests, for example blood count, vitamins and trace elements. We also ask about environmental burdens. On this basis we put the immune infusion together individually. If you have cancer, we support you exclusively as a complement. For this we coordinate with your treating oncologists.

An honest assessment

We see immune infusions as a complement to guideline-based diagnostics and treatment – never as a replacement, especially in cancer. Their effectiveness has not been scientifically proven for every use; that is why we discuss openly what makes sense in your situation.

Careful and personal

What immune infusions involve

01

Investigating the body's defences

We ask about how often and what kind of infections you have, about previous illnesses, medication, stress and environmental burdens.

02

Laboratory results

If needed, we measure blood levels, for example blood count, vitamins and trace elements. This helps us spot deficiencies and signs of other causes.

03

Immune infusion

We put the infusion together individually from vital nutrients such as vitamins and trace elements. We explain what it contains and why.

04

Support with cancer

During or after cancer treatment, we coordinate timing and composition with your treating oncologists.

05

Further immunotherapies

Depending on your results, other complementary methods at our practice may be an option. We introduce these on the Immunotherapy page.

06

Follow-up conversations

As we go along, we discuss how you are doing and adapt our approach to your situation.

Who immune infusions may be suitable for

What may speak in favour

  • You often have infections and would like to clarify the causes
  • You are recovering from illness or surgery
  • You would like complementary support alongside cancer treatment
  • You have exhaustion after a coronavirus infection

When a different approach is needed

An immune infusion replaces neither cancer treatment nor necessary treatment of an infection. If you have a high fever, shortness of breath or feel very unwell, contact the on-call medical service on 116 117, or in an emergency call 112. During chemotherapy we only decide together with your oncology team.

In four steps

How immune infusions work

  1. Appointment

You can book your appointment by phone on 089 299655 or online via Doctolib. Please bring any existing results and doctors' letters.

  2. Conversation and examination

We discuss your history, your infections and your current treatment. If needed, we examine you and take a blood sample.

  3. Treatment plan

We discuss whether an immune infusion makes sense, what it contains, what costs arise and – in the case of cancer – how we coordinate.

  4. Treatment and support

You receive the infusion at our practice. As we go along, we discuss how you are doing and what makes sense next.

Transparent from the start

Costs and health insurance

Immune infusions are generally self-pay services under the German Fee Schedule for Physicians (GOÄ). Private health insurers and Beihilfe reimburse in part, depending on the plan and findings; please feel free to ask them beforehand. Whether individual examinations are covered by your health insurer depends on the reason and on your insurance status. We will tell you before treatment what costs will arise.

The background in detail – click to expand.

How the immune system works

The immune system protects the body against pathogens and recognises altered cells. It consists of an innate, fast defence and an acquired defence that remembers pathogens. To do its work it needs, among other things, vitamins and trace elements such as vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc and selenium. Sleep, stress, exercise, hormones and chronic conditions also influence the body's defences. Frequent or prolonged infections can also be a sign of another condition, for example a disorder of the thyroid or blood sugar. That is why a thorough investigation comes before every immune infusion. Only when we know the possible causes do we put the infusion together.

An immune infusion is not the same as immunotherapy

In cancer medicine, the term immunotherapy also refers to modern medicines that direct the immune system specifically against tumour cells. These treatments belong in the hands of your oncologists. Our immune infusions are to be distinguished from them: they are infusions with vital nutrients such as vitamins and trace elements. They are based on the idea that a good supply of these substances can support the immune system. We use them as a complement, never as a replacement for cancer treatment or any other necessary treatment. We introduce further naturopathic immunotherapies at our practice on the Immunotherapy page.

Complementary support with cancer

Many patients want support during and after cancer treatment that looks at their strength and quality of life. Integrative oncology combines guideline-based cancer therapy with complementary methods. Coordination is important here: some vital nutrients, such as high-dose antioxidants, can interact with chemotherapy or radiotherapy. That is why we coordinate timing and composition with your treating oncologists. Among the topics on which Prof. Schulte-Uebbing has published is immune infusion in cancer therapy. As a co-author he wrote on “Metabolic characteristics of tumour cells as a target of complementary therapies” (German Journal of Oncology, 2018).

Zinc, selenium and vitamin C

Zinc, selenium and vitamin C are involved in many processes of the body's defences. A pronounced deficiency can weaken the defences. More is not automatically better, though: selenium and zinc can themselves be harmful in too-large amounts. That is why we advise against taking high doses on your own initiative. If needed, we measure your levels before we put an infusion together. Prof. Schulte-Uebbing has worked on micronutrients for years. One example is selenium and vitamin D deficiency in Hashimoto's thyroiditis, an autoimmune disease of the thyroid, on which he has published. We include such connections in the investigation.

Long Covid and the body's defences

Long Covid describes symptoms that persist for weeks or months after a coronavirus infection, such as exhaustion, lack of drive, difficulty concentrating or reduced resilience. The causes are not yet fully understood; among other things, processes in the immune system are being discussed. So far there is no infusion with a proven effect against Long Covid. As an immunological practice, we nevertheless support patients with Long Covid symptoms holistically. This includes careful investigation of other causes and the right level of activity. An immune infusion can be a complementary component. You can read more on our Long Covid page.

Frequently asked questions about immune infusions

Can't find your question? Give us a call – we will take the time.

Can an immune infusion replace cancer treatment?

No. An immune infusion is always a complement. Surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormone or antibody therapy and other guideline-based treatments remain the foundation. We support you as a complement and coordinate with your treating oncologists. If you are unsure about a recommended treatment, we take time for your questions.

Can I have an immune infusion during chemotherapy?

We only decide this together with your oncology team. Some vital nutrients can influence the effect of chemotherapy or radiotherapy. That is why timing, composition and your current blood levels matter. Please bring your treatment plan and recent doctors' letters to the appointment.

Does health insurance cover the costs?

Immune infusions are generally self-pay services under the German Fee Schedule for Physicians (GOÄ). Private health insurers and Beihilfe (state healthcare allowance for civil servants) reimburse them in part, depending on the plan and findings. Please check with your insurer beforehand. We will tell you before treatment what costs will arise.

How often do immune infusions make sense?

We decide this individually – based on your results, your situation and how you feel. Sometimes a single infusion is planned, sometimes a series, for example in recovery after an illness. As we go along, we discuss together whether and how to continue.

Does an immune infusion replace a vaccination?

No. Vaccinations protect specifically against certain diseases, which an infusion with vital nutrients cannot do. Have your vaccination status checked according to the recommendations of the Standing Committee on Vaccination (STIKO), for example by your GP. An immune infusion cannot replace vaccinations; at most it can accompany them as a complement.

What is the difference from a vitamin infusion?

A vitamin infusion is aimed mainly at correcting a proven deficiency. We put the immune infusion together with your body's defences in mind. It may be an option, for example, with frequent infections, in recovery after illness or as a complement in cancer. Both are based on vital nutrients and a thorough investigation beforehand.

Does an immune infusion have side effects?

As with any infusion, a bruise or irritation of the vein can occur at the injection site. Circulatory symptoms or allergic reactions are rare. We keep an eye on how you are feeling during the infusion. So that the infusion suits you, we clarify existing conditions, medicines and allergies beforehand in the conversation.

Can I have an immune infusion during pregnancy?

During pregnancy and breastfeeding we are cautious about immune infusions. They are only an option if there is a clear medical reason. If you have a fever during pregnancy, please contact us immediately. Outside consultation hours you can reach the on-call medical service on 116 117, or in an emergency call 112.
