When to come to us

How you can recognise an allergy or intolerance

Symptoms after eating

Bloating, stomach pain, diarrhoea or skin reactions occur after certain foods, and you would like to know why.

Hay fever and airways

Sneezing, a runny nose, itchy eyes or coughing return in certain seasons or in certain rooms.

Skin reactions

Itching, redness or eczema appear after contact with cosmetics, jewellery, cleaning products or fragrances.

Sensitive to fragrances

Perfume, room fragrances or fabric softener trigger headaches, breathlessness or dizziness in you.

Our approach

Our approach to allergies and intolerances

We begin with a detailed conversation: when do your symptoms occur, where and after what contact? This medical history is particularly important in allergies. After that we choose targeted tests. When a classic allergy is suspected, measuring specific IgE antibodies in the blood is a recognised standard. Intolerances, for example to lactose or histamine, are investigated differently. We also look at environmental factors such as fragrances and pollutants and at the immune system as a whole. From this comes an individual plan: avoiding triggers, treating in line with guidelines and, if you wish, complementing with naturopathy.

An honest assessment

We see naturopathic methods such as acupuncture in allergies as a complement, not a replacement for diagnostics and treatment in line with guidelines; their effectiveness has not been scientifically proven for every application, and we discuss openly what makes sense for you.

Careful and personal

What assessment and treatment involve

01

Detailed medical history

We discuss your symptoms, possible triggers, diet, home environment, skincare products and allergies in the family.

02

Allergy test via IgE

Specific IgE antibodies in the blood show whether your immune system is sensitised to certain substances. We always interpret the result together with your symptoms.

03

Allergy test via IgG

IgG antibodies against foods can also be measured. Their informative value for intolerances is scientifically disputed – we explain this to you openly before you decide.

04

Treatment plan

Avoiding triggers, relieving symptoms in line with guidelines and, if needed, having specialist co-treatment, for example in allergology or dermatology.

05

Complementary support

On request we complement with acupuncture or holistic immunotherapy – as a component, not a replacement.

06

Environmental medicine advice

We show you how you can reduce fragrances and other exposures in everyday life.

Who should consider an assessment

What may speak in favour

  • Recurring symptoms with a possible trigger
  • Suspected food allergy or intolerance
  • Sensitivity to fragrances or cosmetics
  • A wish to have existing findings interpreted

When a different approach is needed

In the event of breathlessness, swelling of the tongue, lips or throat, circulatory problems or a rash over the whole body after contact with a trigger, call the emergency number 112 immediately. We discuss whether skin tests or hyposensitisation are useful in addition; an allergy specialist practice may be involved for this.

In four steps

How the assessment works

  1. Book an appointment

By phone on 089 299655 or online via Doctolib. Please come without perfume; our practice is fragrance-free.

  2. Conversation and examination

We take time for your medical history and arrange targeted laboratory tests. A symptom diary is very helpful here.

  3. Findings and treatment plan

We explain in plain terms what the values mean and what they do not, and decide together on the next steps.

  4. Treatment and support

You put measures into practice in everyday life, while complementary treatments take place at the practice. We review progress and adjust.

Transparent from the start

Costs and health insurance

Patients with statutory (GKV) and private health insurance are welcome with us. If an allergy is reasonably suspected, IgE diagnostics may be covered by statutory health insurance. IgG tests for foods and naturopathic treatments such as acupuncture for allergies are generally self-pay services under the German fee schedule for doctors (GOÄ). Whether your private insurance covers costs depends on your plan. We will tell you before every examination what costs will arise.

The background in detail – click to expand.

Allergy or intolerance?

The two terms are often confused. In an allergy, the immune system overreacts to substances that are actually harmless, such as pollen, house dust mites, animal hair or certain foods. In the common immediate-type allergy, the body forms specific IgE antibodies, and symptoms usually appear soon after contact. An intolerance, by contrast, is usually not based on an immune reaction. In lactose intolerance, for example, an enzyme that breaks down milk sugar is missing. The symptoms often depend on the amount and appear with a delay. Contact allergies, for example to fragrances or nickel, are in turn a delayed immune reaction of the skin. The distinction matters because diagnostics and treatment differ considerably.

What an IgE test shows

Detecting specific IgE antibodies in the blood is a recognised part of allergy diagnostics. It shows sensitisation – that is, that the immune system has recognised a substance. Important: sensitisation does not automatically mean an allergy. Many people have raised values without having symptoms. Conversely, a normal value does not always rule out an allergy. We therefore interpret every finding together with your medical history. In addition there are skin tests and, in certain cases, provocation tests under medical supervision. They are mostly carried out in allergy specialist practices or hospitals.

IgG tests for foods, honestly put into context

IgG antibodies against foods are often offered as a test for food intolerances. Their informative value is scientifically disputed. According to current knowledge, IgG antibodies mainly show that the body knows a food. They also occur in people without symptoms. German and European allergy societies therefore do not recommend such tests for diagnosing an intolerance. We want you to know this before you decide on a test. Please do not permanently remove many foods from your diet on the basis of an IgG result alone. This can lead to a one-sided diet and nutrient deficiencies. We discuss openly what a result can mean in your situation.

Fragrances, the environment and allergies

Fragrances are among the common triggers of contact allergies. They are found in perfume, cosmetics, laundry and cleaning products and room fragrances. Some people also react with breathing difficulties, headaches or dizziness without a classic allergy being demonstrable. That is why our practice is nicotine-free and perfume-free. Prof. Schulte-Uebbing has been studying fragrances from an environmental medicine perspective for years, for example in the article series “Perfume-Free Practice – Why?” (Co.med, 2018 and 2019, in German). His book “Treating Allergies and Environmental Illnesses Naturally” (Benno Verlag, Leipzig, 2011, in German) deals with allergies from an environmental medicine and naturopathic perspective.

Treatment options

The basis of any treatment is knowing the trigger and avoiding it where possible. For symptoms, medications such as antihistamines or cortisone-containing nasal sprays are an option. For allergies to pollen, house dust mites or insect venom, hyposensitisation, also called specific immunotherapy, addresses the cause. It takes several years and is usually carried out in allergy specialist practices. For food intolerances, an adapted diet is the main focus, ideally with support from a dietitian. Acupuncture has had its place in our practice for decades, also as a complement for allergies. Its effectiveness is not sufficiently proven for this; we see it as an additional component.

Good questions. Clear answers.

Frequently asked questions about allergies and intolerances

Can't find your question? Give us a call – we will take the time.

Which allergy tests do you offer?

We measure antibodies in the blood: specific IgE if an allergy is suspected and IgG antibodies against foods. IgE diagnostics is a recognised standard. The informative value of IgG tests for intolerances is disputed; we explain this to you beforehand. Which test makes sense depends on your symptoms.

Do I need to fast for the blood test?

For the determination of IgE and IgG antibodies, you generally do not need to be fasting. If other values are measured at the same time, this may differ; we will tell you beforehand. Anti-allergy medication usually does not affect blood tests, unlike skin tests.

Can lactose or histamine intolerance be detected in the blood?

Lactose intolerance is usually investigated with a breath test, as is fructose intolerance. In histamine intolerance, diagnostics are difficult. The focus is on a symptom diary and a targeted elimination and reintroduction trial. An IgG or IgE test is not suitable for this. We discuss which route makes sense for you.

Can an allergy develop for the first time in adulthood?

Yes. Allergies can also first appear in adulthood, for example through new contacts at work or in your home environment. Conversely, childhood allergies can fade. You should therefore have new, recurring symptoms checked at any age.

Do hormones affect allergies?

Some women notice that allergies or skin reactions become stronger or weaker during the cycle, in pregnancy or in the menopause. Hormones and the immune system are in close exchange. As a gynaecology practice, we keep these connections in view and include them in treatment.

Is allergy treatment possible during pregnancy?

Yes, but with particular caution. Many medications are only suitable to a limited extent in pregnancy. New hyposensitisation is generally not started during pregnancy. The focus is on avoiding triggers and well-tolerated measures. We advise you individually.

Why is your practice perfume-free?

Fragrances can trigger allergies, breathlessness, headaches and dizziness. For sensitive people, even the scent in the waiting room is a burden. That is why our practice is nicotine-free and perfume-free. We ask you to refrain from wearing perfume and strongly scented skincare products to your appointment. Thank you for your consideration.

Does health insurance cover the costs?

If an allergy is reasonably suspected, IgE diagnostics may be covered by statutory health insurance. IgG tests for foods and naturopathic treatments are generally self-pay services under the German fee schedule for doctors (GOÄ). We will tell you before every examination what costs will arise.
