When to come to us

How you can recognise Long Covid

Chronic exhaustion

Weeks or months after the infection you feel drained, and rest brings little recovery.

Worse after exertion

Even small efforts lead to a crash, often only hours or a day later.

Concentration and memory

You find it hard to concentrate, forget things or feel as if you are in a fog.

Drive and defences

You lack drive, are constantly tired or catch infections more often than before the illness.

Our approach

Our approach to Long Covid

Long Covid has many faces. That is why we start with a detailed conversation about your infection, your symptoms and your daily life. It is important not to overlook other causes: thyroid, anaemia, nutrient deficiencies, hormonal changes such as the menopause, or heart and lung conditions. There is so far no generally accepted causal therapy. The aim is to support you, ease symptoms and gradually stabilise your stamina. This includes advice on managing your energy and, where appropriate, complementary immunotherapies such as infusions, acupuncture or intravenous laser therapy.

An honest assessment

For Long Covid there is so far no generally accepted causal therapy; the effectiveness of our complementary methods such as infusions or acupuncture is not scientifically proven for it, they do not replace specialist assessment, and we discuss openly what makes sense for you.

What support for Long Covid includes

01

Detailed medical history

We ask about the course of the infection, your symptoms, your stamina, your sleep and pre-existing conditions – and take time to do so.

02

Assessing other causes

Laboratory values, for example blood count, iron, thyroid, vitamin D and hormones, help to identify treatable causes. Where necessary, we recommend further specialist examinations.

03

Advice on your limits

We discuss how you can manage your energy and avoid overexertion – so-called pacing.

04

Infusions for Long Covid

Individually tailored infusions, for example with vitamins and amino acids, are used as a complement to support you in cases of exhaustion. More on the Immune infusions page.

05

Immunotherapy and acupuncture

Acupuncture and intravenous laser therapy can also be part of the plan as complements. More on the Immunotherapy page.

06

Support over time

We see you again at intervals, review what is doing you good and adjust the plan to your strength.

The background in detail – click to expand.

What Long Covid is

Long Covid refers to health problems that persist for longer than four weeks after a Covid infection or that newly appear. If they last longer than twelve weeks, it is called post-Covid syndrome. Typical features are chronic exhaustion (fatigue), reduced stamina, problems with concentration and memory, sleep disorders, shortness of breath, racing heart and lack of drive. The symptoms can also appear after a mild illness. Their causes are not yet fully understood. Among the possibilities discussed are persistent inflammatory reactions, a malfunction of the immune system, remnants of the virus remaining in the body and disturbances of the small blood vessels. In many people affected, several factors probably act together.

Your limits and pacing

Many people affected find that their condition worsens markedly after physical or mental exertion – often delayed by hours or a day. Experts speak of exertion intolerance or post-exertional malaise. In this case forced exercise can do harm. The recommended approach is so-called pacing: consciously managing your own energy, taking breaks before exhaustion sets in and spreading activities across the day. A diary helps to recognise your own limits. The aim is to avoid setbacks and to stabilise your stamina gradually and carefully. We discuss with you what this can look like in your daily life.

Ruling out other causes

Exhaustion and tiredness have many possible causes. Not everything that appears after a Covid infection is Long Covid. Similar symptoms can be caused, for example, by an underactive thyroid or Hashimoto's disease, iron deficiency and anaemia. A lack of vitamin D or vitamin B12, sleep disorders, depression or heart and lung conditions are also possible. In women, hormonal causes come into play, especially during the menopause. Prof. Schulte-Uebbing described back in 2014 that tiredness can conceal a thyroid condition: “Depressive Moods, Tiredness, Poor Performance – Hashimoto's Disease: An Often Overlooked Important (Partial) Cause” (gyn, 2014). Careful assessment is therefore the first step.

Immune system and infusions

As an immunological practice, we care for patients with Long Covid symptoms such as chronic exhaustion, lack of drive, fatigue and immune deficiencies – in other words, weakened defences. Our therapy after Covid infections includes complementary immunotherapies. These include individually tailored infusions, for example with vitamins, trace elements and amino acids, as well as acupuncture and intravenous laser therapy. These methods are based on the idea of supporting metabolism and the defences and so accompanying recovery. For Long Covid their effectiveness has not been proven scientifically. That is why we use them only after assessment, in agreement with you and as a complement. What we do not do: promise you a quick recovery.

Research and care

Long Covid is being intensively researched worldwide. Studies are under way on medicines, rehabilitation and causes. So far, however, there is no treatment that removes the cause in everyone affected. Many people notice an improvement over time; for some it takes longer. For severe courses, for example with marked exertion intolerance or the picture of myalgic encephalomyelitis / chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), there are specialist outpatient clinics and rehabilitation services. We see ourselves as your local point of contact who listens, assesses and supports – and, where necessary, refers you to specialists.

Good questions. Clear answers.

FAQs about Long Covid

Can't find your question? Give us a call – we will take the time.

When is it called Long Covid?

We speak of Long Covid when symptoms persist for longer than four weeks after a Covid infection or newly appear. If they last longer than twelve weeks, it is called post-Covid syndrome. A positive test helps with assessment but is not strictly necessary. What matters is the timing and the exclusion of other causes.

Is there a causal therapy for Long Covid?

So far there is no generally accepted therapy that removes the cause of Long Covid. Treatment is guided by the symptoms. The aim is to ease symptoms, avoid setbacks and stabilise your stamina. Many people notice an improvement over time, but the pace varies greatly.

Do infusions help with Long Covid?

Infusions with vitamins, trace elements or amino acids are used as a complement to support you in cases of exhaustion. Their effectiveness in Long Covid has not been proven scientifically. We discuss openly with you whether a trial makes sense for you and what costs arise.

Should I exercise a lot despite exhaustion?

Not at any price. If your symptoms get worse after exertion, forced exercise can do harm. In that case the advice is to manage your own energy and stay below your limit – so-called pacing. Whether and how exercise suits you is something we discuss individually.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Bring any results, laboratory values, doctors' letters and a list of your medications and dietary supplements. A short symptom diary is helpful: when do you feel better, when worse, and what came before? That way we can place your situation more quickly.

Are you a post-Covid outpatient clinic?

No, we are a gynaecological and immunological practice in Munich's old town. We support patients with Long Covid symptoms holistically, assess other causes and offer complementary treatments. For severe courses we also recommend a specialist post-Covid outpatient clinic or rehabilitation.

Can Long Covid affect the cycle and hormones?

Some women report changes to their cycle after a Covid infection, or stronger symptoms before their period or during the menopause. The connections are still being researched. As a gynaecology practice, we also look at your hormones and distinguish what belongs to Long Covid and what may be hormonal.

Does health insurance cover the costs?

Consultation, examination and medically necessary laboratory values are billed through your health insurer, depending on your insurance status. Complementary methods such as infusions or intravenous laser therapy are generally self-pay services under the German medical fee schedule (GOÄ). We will tell you beforehand what costs to expect.
