When to come to us

When acupuncture may be an option for you

Recurring pain

Headaches, migraine, period pain, back or joint pain accompany you. You are looking for a complementary treatment alongside your current therapy.

Cycle, hormones, menopause

Cycle disorders, menopausal symptoms, endometriosis, fibroids or PCOS concern you. You would like to complement your gynaecological treatment holistically.

Fertility

You would like to have a child and, besides medical assessment, also want to use complementary, gentle methods.

Exhaustion and stress

You feel permanently exhausted, stressed or prone to infections and would like to support your immune system as a complement.

Our approach

Our approach to acupuncture

At our practice, acupuncture is not a stand-alone method but part of a holistic plan. First we assess your symptoms by conventional means – with a conversation, examination and, where necessary, ultrasound or laboratory tests. Then we choose the acupuncture points individually, according to your symptoms and the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Depending on your concern, we combine body and ear acupuncture or use needle-free laser acupuncture. In doing so, Prof. Dr. Schulte-Uebbing combines decades of experience in acupuncture with his knowledge as a gynaecologist and environmental medicine specialist.

An honest assessment

Acupuncture complements guideline-based diagnostics and treatment; it does not replace them – its effectiveness has not been scientifically proven for every application, so we discuss openly what makes sense for you.

Careful and personal

What acupuncture involves

01

Body acupuncture

Fine, sterile single-use needles are placed at selected points. While the needles are in place, you rest relaxed on the couch.

02

Ear acupuncture

In the ear, points are needled that, according to the teaching of ear acupuncture, are assigned to particular body regions and organs. It combines well with body acupuncture.

03

Laser acupuncture

If you do not want needles, we stimulate the points with laser light – according to Dr. Weber and without puncture. More on the Laser acupuncture page.

04

Individual choice of points

Which points we choose depends on your symptoms, your findings and the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

05

Part of your overall plan

Acupuncture can be combined with hormone therapy, infusions, herbal medicine or other naturopathic methods – always coordinated with your conventional treatment.

From research

Prof. Schulte-Uebbing has published on this.

Over more than four decades, more than 400 scientific publications have been written – on gynaecology, oncology, environmental medicine, hormones, immunology and naturopathy. This knowledge informs every consultation with your gynaecologist in Munich.

When a different approach is needed

For acute severe pain, heavy bleeding or fever during pregnancy: on-call medical service 116 117, in an emergency 112. Acupuncture does not replace any necessary specialist, psychotherapeutic or oncological treatment. In pregnancy or when taking anticoagulants, we discuss beforehand whether and how we perform acupuncture.

In four steps

How acupuncture works

  1. Book an appointment

Call us on 089 299655 or book online via Doctolib. Our practice is at Residenzstraße 9, near Marienplatz and Odeonsplatz.

  2. Conversation and examination

We take time for your history, your symptoms and previous findings. Whatever should be clarified by conventional means, we clarify first.

  3. Treatment plan

Together we decide whether body, ear or laser acupuncture is suitable, how often you are treated and what we combine acupuncture with.

  4. Treatment and support

You lie comfortably, and the needles stay in place for a while. During the session we talk about how you are doing and adjust the treatment.

Transparent from the start

Costs and health insurance

Statutory health insurers cover acupuncture only in narrowly defined cases: for chronic low back pain and for chronic knee pain due to osteoarthritis, in each case under certain conditions. In all other cases, acupuncture is a self-pay service under the German fee schedule for doctors (GOÄ) for patients with statutory health insurance. Private health insurers and Beihilfe reimburse depending on the policy. We will tell you before the treatment what the costs will be.

What acupuncture is

Acupuncture is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Fine needles are inserted into the skin at defined points. According to TCM, these points lie on pathways, the meridians, along which the life energy Qi flows. Symptoms are regarded there as an expression of disturbed flow. Western explanatory models assume that needle stimuli address nerves and influence the release of the body's own messenger substances. Acupuncture is well studied above all for certain chronic pain conditions. This is why statutory health insurers cover it for chronic low back and knee pain under defined conditions. For many other applications, the effectiveness is not sufficiently proven scientifically. We therefore always use acupuncture as a complement and tell you openly what you can expect.

Ear acupuncture

Ear acupuncture, also called auriculotherapy, was described in the 1950s by the French doctor Paul Nogier. It is based on the idea that the whole body is represented on the outer ear – like an upside-down embryo. Certain points on the ear are therefore assigned to organs and body regions. The needles for the ear are particularly fine. Ear and body acupuncture combine well. On ear acupuncture, Prof. Schulte-Uebbing has written, among other things, the chapter “Ear Acupuncture in Obstetrics” in the textbook “Principles of Ear Acupuncture, Microsystem of the Auricle” (Thieme, 2010).

What we use acupuncture for as a complement

Acupuncture and ear acupuncture have been an important focus of our practice for decades. We use them as a complement in four areas. To support the immune system: as a complement for stress, burnout syndrome, states of exhaustion, weakened immune defences and frequent infections, and alongside treatment for cancer. For metabolic regulation: as a complement for metabolic, hormonal and digestive disorders, overweight, heart complaints, allergies, depression and anxiety. In gynaecology: as a complement for cycle and hormonal disorders, menopausal symptoms, fibroids, endometriosis, PCOS and fertility. In pain therapy: as a complement for headaches, migraine, period pain, lumbago, sciatica, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, rheumatism, shoulder-arm complaints, complaints of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, hip, knee and elbow pain, and adhesion and scar pain. Acupuncture does not replace any necessary specialist, psychotherapeutic or oncological treatment; in cases of cancer, we liaise with your treating oncologists.

Qualifications of Prof. Schulte-Uebbing

Prof. Schulte-Uebbing has been a member of the German Medical Acupuncture Association (DÄGfA) for decades. There he has given many courses for colleagues as a lecturer. He holds the additional qualification in acupuncture. From the DÄGfA he has earned acupuncture diploma A and the “major” acupuncture diploma B, as well as the acupuncture diploma of Tianjin University in China. He is the author of the acupuncture textbook for gynaecologists and co-author of the acupuncture guidelines for gynaecologists. Together with E. Seiler he wrote the textbook “Acupuncture for Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Postnatal Period” (Pschyrembel / De Gruyter 2000, new edition Gesund Media 2018) and the book “Qi Magnet Acupuncture – The Simple Way to Promote Health” (Gesund Media, 2018).

Acupuncture in the research of Prof. Schulte-Uebbing

Prof. Schulte-Uebbing has published numerous specialist articles on acupuncture, ear acupuncture and laser acupuncture. These include “A holistic treatment concept for endometriosis incorporating Traditional Chinese acupuncture, ear acupuncture and phytotherapy” (Z.A.E.N., 2013) and “Acupuncture, ear acupuncture and phytotherapy for the treatment of Hashimoto's disease” (ZAA, 2015). In 2016 a two-part series followed in the journal CO'MED: “Acupuncture and ear acupuncture for women's diseases, Part 1: Fundamentals of TCM, systematics, principles” and “Acupuncture and ear acupuncture as an important component of integrative treatment of environment-related gynaecological diseases, Part 2”. This work shows how closely acupuncture, gynaecology and environmental medicine belong together in our practice.

Good questions. Clear answers.

Frequently asked questions about acupuncture

Can't find your question? Give us a call – we will take the time.

Does acupuncture hurt?

The needles are very fine, much finer than a syringe. Many people feel only a brief prick on insertion. Sometimes a dull, pulling or warm sensation occurs at the point. If anything is uncomfortable, please tell us immediately. Those who do not want needles can choose laser acupuncture.

Will my health insurer cover acupuncture?

Statutory health insurers cover acupuncture only for chronic low back pain and chronic knee pain due to osteoarthritis, under certain conditions. For other concerns it is a self-pay service under the GOÄ. Private insurers reimburse depending on the policy. We will tell you before the treatment what the costs will be.

How often do I have to come?

That depends on your concern. Acupuncture is usually planned as a series of several sessions, often at regular intervals. How many appointments make sense for you, we discuss in the treatment plan. As we go along, we look together at how you are doing and adjust the plan.

Does acupuncture have side effects?

Acupuncture by experienced doctors is considered well tolerated. Small bruises, a drop of blood at the puncture site, tiredness or brief dizziness are possible. Serious complications are rare. Please tell us if you take blood-thinning medication or are pregnant.

How do I prepare for acupuncture?

Please do not come on an empty stomach; a light meal beforehand is good. Wear comfortable clothing that is easy to push up. Bring your medication list. Our practice is perfume-free, so we ask you to avoid perfume and fragrances.

Can I have acupuncture during pregnancy?

Please always tell us if you are or might be pregnant. Certain points are not needled during pregnancy. Prof. Schulte-Uebbing is a co-author of the textbook “Acupuncture for Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Postnatal Period”. Whether and how acupuncture is an option during your pregnancy, we clarify in a consultation.

Can acupuncture make sense for fertility?

In fertility care, acupuncture is often used as a complement, for example for relaxation and alongside cycle or hormonal disorders. Whether it increases the chance of pregnancy has not been clearly proven scientifically. What matters first is a medical assessment of you and your partner. Afterwards we discuss whether acupuncture sensibly complements your plan.

What is the difference between body and ear acupuncture?

In body acupuncture, the points lie on the meridians across the whole body. In ear acupuncture, points on the outer ear are needled which, according to the teaching of ear acupuncture, are assigned to organs and body regions. The two forms can be combined. Which one suits you, we decide according to your symptoms.
