When PLACU therapy may be worth considering

Gynaecological symptoms

Questions about the method

Our approach

Our approach to PLACU therapy

Acupuncture has been a focus of our practice for decades. Prof. Schulte-Uebbing has been a member of the German Medical Acupuncture Association (DÄGfA) for decades and is the author of the acupuncture textbook for gynaecologists. PLACU therapy combines this knowledge with PRP therapy. Platelet-rich plasma is obtained from your blood and applied at selected acupuncture points. The method is based on the idea that stimulation of the points and the body's own growth factors complement each other. Every treatment is preceded by a detailed consultation and thorough diagnostics in line with guidelines.

An honest assessment

PLACU therapy is a complementary method without sufficient proof of efficacy – we use it only as a supplement to diagnostics and treatment in line with guidelines.

Who PLACU therapy may be suitable for

What may speak in favour

  • You would like to complement an existing treatment
  • Your symptoms have been medically assessed
  • You are open to acupuncture and your own blood
  • You do not have a blood clotting disorder

When a different approach is needed

In the case of acute severe lower abdominal pain, heavy bleeding or fever, contact the on-call medical service on 116 117 straight away, or call 112 in an emergency. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, or in the case of clotting disorders or acute infections, PLACU therapy is generally not an option.

By phone on 089 299655 or online via Doctolib. Bring any existing findings and a list of your medication.

  2. Conversation and examination

We take time for your medical history, examine you and clarify what diagnostics are still missing.

  3. Treatment plan

We discuss whether PLACU therapy sensibly complements your treatment, how it proceeds and what costs arise.

  4. Treatment and support

Blood collection, preparation of the plasma and application at the acupuncture points. We discuss the course of treatment together with you.

Transparent from the start

Costs and health insurance

PLACU therapy is a self-pay service. Statutory health insurance (GKV) does not usually cover it; private health insurers reimburse complementary medical methods differently depending on the plan. Billing follows the German fee schedule for doctors (GOÄ). Depending on the findings and the insurance, the preceding diagnostics may be covered by statutory insurance. We will tell you before the treatment what costs will arise.

What the name means

PLACU stands for “Platelet Acupuncture Therapy”. “Platelet” stands for blood platelets, “Acupuncture” for acupuncture. The name thus describes the combination of two components: platelet-rich plasma from your own blood and selected acupuncture points. Each of the two methods is known in its own right. Methods using the patient's own blood have long been used in naturopathy, and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is now also used in aesthetic medicine and orthopaedics. Acupuncture originates from Traditional Chinese Medicine. How Prof. Schulte-Uebbing combines the two approaches and which points he chooses, he will explain to you in a personal consultation.

Platelet-rich plasma

For the plasma, a small amount of blood is taken from a vein in the arm. In a centrifuge, the blood separates into its components. The part of the plasma containing many platelets is drawn off and prepared. Platelets, also called thrombocytes, contain growth factors and messenger substances that are involved in wound healing. PRP therapy is based on the idea of using these substances in a targeted way where the body is to be stimulated. Because the plasma comes from your own blood, intolerance to the material itself is rare. You can read more about the method and possible side effects on our PRP therapy page.

Acupuncture at our practice

Acupuncture and ear acupuncture have been a focus of our practice for decades. Prof. Schulte-Uebbing has been a member of the German Medical Acupuncture Association (DÄGfA) for decades and has taught many courses there as a lecturer. He holds the additional qualification in acupuncture, the DÄGfA acupuncture diploma A and the “major” diploma B, as well as the acupuncture diploma of Tianjin University in China. He is the author of the acupuncture textbook for gynaecologists and co-author of the acupuncture guidelines for gynaecologists. He has published numerous articles on acupuncture, ear acupuncture and laser acupuncture. These include the German-language textbook “Acupuncture for Pregnancy, Birth and the Postnatal Period”, written jointly with E. Seiler.

Specialist articles from 2024

In 2024, Prof. Schulte-Uebbing presented PLACU therapy in several articles in the Journal of Applied Complementary Medicine, a German-language journal, in some cases together with other authors. The first article is titled “PLACU therapy (Platelet Acupuncture Therapy): a new and effective method for practice and hospital” (issue 04/2024). It was followed by “PLACU therapy in gynaecology (Platelet Acupuncture Therapy)” (issue 05/2024) and “Endometriosis – PLACU therapy can help” (issue 07/2024). The titles (translated from the German) reflect the authors' own assessment. Whether PLACU therapy makes sense in your situation, we discuss openly and without promises. You will find the full details on our Publications page.

Supporting endometriosis holistically

Endometriosis is a chronic condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows outside the womb. It can bring severe period pain, lower abdominal pain and an unfulfilled wish to have a child. Prof. Schulte-Uebbing has been working scientifically on endometriosis for many years, for example on environmental factors, acupuncture and laser therapy. For us, PLACU therapy is a possible complementary component. It does not replace treatment in line with guidelines, for example with hormones, painkillers or surgery. Endometriosis is a focus of our practice; we take time for your symptoms and your questions. You can read more about diagnosis and treatment on our endometriosis page.

Frequently asked questions about PLACU therapy

Can't find your question? Give us a call – we will take the time.

What does PLACU mean?

PLACU is the abbreviation for “Platelet Acupuncture Therapy”. The name combines the English word for blood platelets with acupuncture. It refers to a method in which platelet-rich plasma from your own blood is applied at selected acupuncture points. Prof. Schulte-Uebbing published several specialist articles on it in 2024.

What happens during a treatment?

First we take a small amount of blood from a vein in your arm and use a centrifuge to obtain platelet-rich plasma from it. This is applied at acupuncture points that Prof. Schulte-Uebbing selects individually. We will explain in the consultation how the treatment proceeds in detail and how often it makes sense.

What distinguishes PLACU from classical acupuncture?

In classical body or ear acupuncture, fine needles are placed at acupuncture points. In PLACU therapy, platelet-rich plasma from your own blood is added and applied at the points. We decide together which method is an option in your situation. We also offer classical acupuncture and laser acupuncture.

Is PLACU therapy painful?

You know blood collection as a brief prick. Applying the plasma at the acupuncture points also involves small needle pricks, which can be uncomfortable. Afterwards the area may be red or tender for a short time. Please feel free to ask us how the treatment feels.

What symptoms is it used for?

Prof. Schulte-Uebbing has described PLACU therapy in specialist articles for practice and hospital, for gynaecology and for endometriosis. Whether it is an option in your situation depends on your symptoms, findings and previous treatments. We clarify this in a detailed consultation – openly and without promises.

Does PLACU therapy replace endometriosis treatment?

No. Endometriosis calls for diagnosis and treatment in line with guidelines, for example with hormones, painkillers or surgery. PLACU therapy can complement this treatment but not replace it. We coordinate it with your existing therapy and discuss openly what you can expect.

Is PLACU therapy possible during pregnancy?

During pregnancy and breastfeeding, methods using platelet-rich plasma are generally not recommended because there is not enough data for them. Acupuncture, on the other hand, can be used in certain situations during pregnancy. Prof. Schulte-Uebbing is co-author of a textbook on acupuncture in pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period. Please talk to us.

Does health insurance cover the costs?

PLACU therapy is a self-pay service billed under the German fee schedule for doctors (GOÄ). Statutory health insurance (GKV) does not usually cover it; private insurers vary depending on the plan. The preceding diagnostics may be covered by statutory insurance. We will tell you before the treatment what costs will arise.

Where can I read the specialist articles?

The articles appeared in 2024 in the Journal of Applied Complementary Medicine, a German-language journal, in issues 04, 05 and 07. You will find the full details on our Publications page. Further publications by Prof. Schulte-Uebbing on acupuncture and endometriosis are also listed there.
