When to come to us

When a hyaluronic acid treatment may be an option

Lines around the nose and mouth

Nasolabial folds – the lines from the nose to the corners of the mouth – or lines around the mouth look deeper than you feel.

A tired-looking face

Your cheeks or temples have lost volume, and your face looks tired even though you are well rested.

Dry, dull skin

Your skin feels tight, looks dull and has lost firmness – for example during or after the menopause.

Fine lines at the lips

Fine lines on the upper lip bother you, or your lips have become thinner over the years.

Our approach

Our approach to hyaluronic acid treatments

A hyaluronic acid treatment at our practice is not a quick appointment in between other things. In the first consultation, we look at your face calmly, ask about your wishes, pre-existing conditions, allergies and medication, and explain what hyaluronic acid can do and where its limits lie. As a gynaecology practice, we also take your stage of life into account, because hormonal changes such as the menopause affect the skin's moisture and firmness. We prefer to treat gently and top up if needed rather than change too much at once. The aim is for your face to look fresher and for your expression to be preserved.

An honest assessment

The body gradually breaks down hyaluronic acid, so the effect is temporary and varies from person to person – we cannot promise how clearly or for how long a result will be visible.

Hyaluronic acid is injected specifically beneath individual wrinkles, for example at the nasolabial folds or around the mouth, with the aim of plumping and softening them from within.

03

Volume restoration

Where volume has been lost over the years, for example at the cheeks or temples, hyaluronic acid can compensate gently.

04

Moisture for the skin

Finely distributed hyaluronic acid is intended to supply the skin with moisture from within and support its firmness – for more natural freshness.

05

What may speak in favour

  • Wrinkles that bother you in everyday life
  • Loss of volume at the cheeks or temples

When a different approach is needed

During pregnancy and breastfeeding, with acute inflammation or herpes in the treatment area, with certain autoimmune diseases and with blood clotting disorders, we do not treat, or only after careful consideration. Markedly sagging skin can only be influenced to a limited extent with hyaluronic acid; here we advise you openly on other options.

Together we decide which areas we treat, to what extent and what the costs will be. You decide in your own time.

Transparent from the start

Costs and health insurance

A hyaluronic acid treatment for aesthetic reasons is a self-pay service; statutory and private health insurers do not generally cover it. We bill under the German fee schedule for doctors (GOÄ). The costs depend mainly on the amount of hyaluronic acid and the number of treated areas. We tell you before the treatment what the costs will be so that you can decide in your own time.

What hyaluronic acid is

Hyaluronic acid is a substance produced by the body, found in skin, connective tissue and joints. It can bind many times its own weight in water and so contributes to the moisture, firmness and cushioning of the skin. Over the years the body produces less of it, while collagen and elastic fibres decline at the same time. The skin becomes thinner, drier and loses volume – wrinkles become more visible. For aesthetic treatments, hyaluronic acid is produced as a gel that is very similar to the body's own substance. Because it occurs naturally in the body, allergic reactions are uncommon but possible. That is why we ask about allergies and previous reactions before every treatment.

How wrinkle filler treatment works

In wrinkle filler treatment, the hyaluronic acid gel is introduced with a fine needle or a blunt cannula beneath the wrinkle or into areas of volume loss. There it plumps the tissue and binds water. Depending on the concern, there are gels of different firmness: firmer ones for restoring volume, softer ones for fine lines or for more moisture. Hyaluronic acid is mainly suited to wrinkles that are visible even when the face is relaxed. Expression lines caused by muscle movement can only be influenced to a limited extent. A change is usually visible straight away; the actual result shows once any swelling has subsided after a few days.

How long hyaluronic acid lasts

The body gradually breaks down hyaluronic acid. How quickly depends on the type of gel, the treated area, your metabolism, your facial expression and your lifestyle. The effect is therefore temporary, and women experience it for different lengths of time. If you wish to maintain the result, you can repeat the treatment after some time – you decide in your own time; there is no obligation. The fact that hyaluronic acid breaks down also has an advantage: changes are not permanent. If necessary, a gel can also be dissolved in a targeted way with an enzyme.

Side effects and risks

After a hyaluronic acid treatment, redness, swelling, tenderness and small bruises at the injection sites are possible; they usually subside within a few days. Small lumps can sometimes be felt. In isolated cases there are inflammations, allergic reactions or a flare-up of cold sores. A serious but uncommon complication is blockage of a blood vessel by the gel. Warning signs are severe pain, pale or bluish discolouration of the skin or visual disturbances; in that case medical help is needed immediately. Because such risks exist, the treatment belongs in medical hands, with thorough information at the outset.

Hyaluronic acid, hormones and the menopause

Oestrogens promote the formation of collagen and hyaluronic acid in the skin. When their levels fall in the menopause, the skin often loses noticeable moisture and elasticity. A hyaluronic acid treatment works on the skin, not on this cause. As a gynaecology practice, we therefore also look at your hormonal situation: if you suffer from menopausal symptoms, we discuss the options available – from lifestyle and diet to natural hormone therapy. Alongside hyaluronic acid, methods such as a fruit acid peel, mesotherapy or PRP for the skin may be options. How they fit together, you can read on our page on skin rejuvenation.

Frequently asked questions about hyaluronic acid

Can't find your question? Give us a call – we will take the time.

Does hyaluronic acid change my facial expression?

No. Hyaluronic acid is a filler that binds moisture and plumps tissue. It does not act on the facial muscles and paralyses nothing. The aim is to gently compensate for wrinkles and loss of volume so that your face looks fresher and your expression remains entirely your own.

Does the treatment hurt?

The injections are made with a very fine needle or cannula. Many women find them quite tolerable; areas such as the lips are more sensitive. We discuss in advance whether a local anaesthetic makes sense. After the treatment, the area may feel tight or tender for a while.

When will I see a result?

A change is usually visible straight after the treatment. Because slight swelling is possible in the first few days, the actual result only shows afterwards. How the result turns out for you and how long it lasts varies from person to person – so we promise nothing in advance, but honestly discuss what you can expect.

How long does a hyaluronic acid treatment last?

The body gradually breaks down hyaluronic acid, so the effect is temporary. How long it lasts depends on the gel, the area, metabolism and facial expression and varies from woman to woman. A repeat treatment is possible if you wish – there is no obligation.

What do I need to bear in mind after the treatment?

In the first few days, you should not massage or press the treated areas and should avoid sauna, intense exercise, strong sun and tanning beds. It is better to leave make-up off on the day of treatment. Cooling can ease swelling. If you have severe pain, pale or bluish skin or visual disturbances, please contact us immediately; outside consultation hours, call the on-call medical service on 116 117, or in an emergency 112.

Is hyaluronic acid possible during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

During pregnancy and breastfeeding we postpone aesthetic hyaluronic acid treatments. There is insufficient safety data for this time, and skin and tissue change greatly with hormones anyway. Afterwards we are happy to plan together. For questions about skin and hormones at this stage of life, we are here for you as a gynaecology practice.

Does health insurance cover the costs?

As a rule, no. An aesthetic hyaluronic acid treatment is a self-pay service, including for patients with private health insurance. We bill under the German fee schedule for doctors (GOÄ). The costs depend mainly on the amount of hyaluronic acid and the number of areas. Before the treatment, you will be told what the costs will be.

Can I combine hyaluronic acid with other treatments?

Yes, depending on your concern, a combination can make sense. Hyaluronic acid targets wrinkles and volume, a fruit acid peel the surface of the skin. Mesotherapy and PRP for the skin are complementary methods intended to stimulate the skin's regeneration. Which order and which intervals suit you, we decide together in your treatment plan.
