When to come to us

When body and soul should be considered together

Symptoms without a clear finding

Pelvic pain, cycle-related symptoms or exhaustion persist even though previous examinations showed nothing unusual.

Stress and exhaustion

You notice that ongoing stress, exhaustion or poor sleep are affecting your cycle and your wellbeing.

Mood and hormones

Before your period, during the menopause or with thyroid problems, your mood, drive and sleep change, and you are looking for connections.

Stressful phases of life

An unfulfilled wish for a child, cancer or an operation is weighing on you emotionally, and you would like medical support with time.

Our approach

Our approach: body, soul and mind

We see people as a whole – body, soul and mind. That is why we take time for a detailed conversation about your symptoms and your life situation. We assess physical causes thoroughly, including hormones and the thyroid. Our aim is to bring the immune, hormone and nervous systems, metabolism and mind into balance. Complementary naturopathic methods such as acupuncture or psycho-energetic approaches can be part of your plan. We do not replace psychotherapy. If you need psychotherapeutic help, we will raise this openly.

An honest assessment

Our complementary services replace neither guideline-based treatment nor psychotherapy; their effectiveness is not scientifically proven for every application, and we discuss openly what makes sense for you.

Careful and personal

What our support includes

01

Detailed consultation

We ask about your symptoms, your cycle, your sleep, the strains of everyday life and your life situation – calmly and in confidence.

02

Physical assessment

Gynaecological examination, ultrasound and laboratory tests, including hormone and thyroid values. This is how we identify physical causes that can affect mood and wellbeing.

03

Hormones and the mind

Where hormonal fluctuations, menopause or a thyroid condition play a role, we include this in the treatment, for example with natural hormone therapy.

04

Acupuncture and ear acupuncture

Complementary support for stress, states of exhaustion, burnout syndrome, anxiety and low mood – as one building block, not as a substitute for proper treatment.

05

Psycho-energetic approaches

Complementary methods based on the idea that emotional stress affects the body's energy balance. We discuss individually what this includes.

06

Where to find further help

If you need psychotherapeutic or psychiatric support, we will tell you openly. Appointments for a psychotherapy consultation can also be arranged through 116 117.

The background in detail – click to expand.

What is psychosomatic medicine?

Psychosomatic medicine describes the interaction between body and soul. Emotional stress can trigger or intensify physical symptoms, such as tension, headaches, digestive problems or sleep disorders. Conversely, physical illnesses, pain or hormonal changes can affect mood. Psychosomatic medicine therefore does not look for either a physical or an emotional cause, but for how the two interact. What matters: psychosomatic does not mean “imagined”. The symptoms are real and deserve a thorough assessment. In gynaecology this interplay plays a major role, because the cycle, fertility, pregnancy and menopause affect body and soul alike.

Hormones, thyroid and mood

Hormones influence mood, drive and sleep. Before a period, after childbirth and during the menopause, some women therefore experience mood swings, irritability or low spirits. An underactive thyroid can also be accompanied by tiredness, lack of drive and low mood, for example in Hashimoto's disease, an autoimmune inflammation of the thyroid. Prof. Schulte-Uebbing has studied this connection scientifically, for example in the article “Depressive Moods, Tiredness, Reduced Performance – Hashimoto's Disease: An Often Overlooked Important (Partial) Cause” (gyn, 2014). That is why hormone and thyroid values form part of our assessment when mood and energy are out of balance. Depression can, however, also exist on its own and then needs its own treatment.

Body, soul and mind

Our practice sees people in their wholeness as part of creation – body, soul and mind. From this follows an individual, cause-oriented treatment plan to bring body, mind and soul into harmony. Our aim is to strengthen and harmonise the immune, hormone and nervous systems, metabolism and mind equally. Prof. Schulte-Uebbing also engages with the spiritual questions of medicine. In Munich, for example, he led the seminar “The Medicine and Spirituality of Hildegard von Bingen, with Particular Attention to Psyche and Soul” (2010). There were also several seminars on “Medicine, Music and Spirituality”. Whether and how you wish to make use of such ideas is entirely up to you.

What is meant by psycho-energetics?

In complementary medicine, the term psycho-energetics is used for approaches based on the idea that emotional stress can affect a person's energy balance. Similar ideas can be found in Traditional Chinese Medicine, which assumes a flow of life energy, and in Traditional Western Medicine. Methods from this field are intended to help identify stress and support inner balance. These ideas are not scientifically proven. We therefore use such approaches only as a complement. Beforehand, we explain exactly what we are doing, what you can expect and what you cannot.

Where our support ends

We are a gynaecology practice with a holistic approach. Our support does not replace psychotherapy. For depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, the after-effects of trauma or addiction, treatment by psychotherapists or by specialists in psychiatry or psychosomatic medicine is important. Your GP is also a point of contact. Appointments for a psychotherapy consultation are arranged by the appointment service (Terminservicestelle) on 116 117. In an acute crisis, or if you have thoughts of taking your own life, call the emergency number 112 immediately. If we have the impression that you need more support, we will raise this openly and sensitively.

Good questions. Clear answers.

Frequently asked questions about psychosomatic medicine

Can't find your question? Give us a call – we will take the time.

Are you a psychotherapy practice?

No. We are a gynaecology practice with a holistic approach. We take time for conversations and include emotional strain in the treatment. We do not replace psychotherapy. If you need psychotherapeutic help, we will tell you and show you the way to it.

Does psychosomatic mean I am imagining my symptoms?

No. Psychosomatic symptoms are real and can be very distressing. The term simply describes that body and soul work together. That is why we first assess physical causes thoroughly and take your symptoms seriously, even if findings initially show nothing unusual.

Can a thyroid condition affect mood?

Yes, that is possible. An underactive thyroid, for example in Hashimoto's disease, can be accompanied by tiredness, lack of drive and low mood. Hormonal fluctuations during the cycle and the menopause also play a role. That is why, with such symptoms, we also check hormone and thyroid values.

What happens in psycho-energetics?

That depends on the method that may be suitable for you. Beforehand, we explain exactly how it works, what it is based on and where its limits lie. Psycho-energetics is a complementary approach; its effectiveness is not scientifically proven.

Is acupuncture used for stress and exhaustion?

Yes, as a complement. We use acupuncture and ear acupuncture as one building block for stress, exhaustion, burnout syndrome and anxiety. Whether they will do you good cannot be predicted; the scientific evidence is limited. We discuss openly whether trying them makes sense for you.

What should I do in an acute emotional crisis?

Please do not wait for an appointment. Call the emergency number 112 or the on-call medical service on 116 117. Talk to someone you trust and do not stay alone. Afterwards, we are happy to be there to support you further.

Is a detailed consultation covered by statutory health insurance?

Medical consultations as part of gynaecological treatment are billed to statutory (GKV) or private health insurance, depending on your insurance status. Complementary naturopathic methods are mostly self-pay services under the GOÄ. We will tell you before treatment what costs to expect.

Can I come to you with fertility concerns or after cancer?

Yes. An unfulfilled wish for a child and cancer put a strain on body and soul. We support you from a gynaecological and holistic perspective, and in the case of cancer always in coordination with your treating oncologists. More about this on our pages on fertility and cancer aftercare.
