When to come to us

When metabolic infusions may be an option for you

Weight despite your efforts

You watch your diet and exercise, but your weight hardly changes, and you would like to understand why.

Hormones and thyroid

You suspect that hormones, the thyroid or the menopause are affecting your metabolism and would like this investigated.

Tired and sluggish

You often feel drained and lacking in energy and would like to know whether metabolism or nutrient supply play a role.

Support with weight management

You have decided to change your diet and would like holistic medical support while doing so.

Our approach

Our approach to metabolic infusions

A changed metabolism and weight gain often have several causes. That is why we first take a close look: in a detailed consultation and, where needed, with lab tests, for example on the thyroid, hormones, blood sugar and nutrients. As a practice for gynaecology and environmental medicine, we also pay attention to hormonal disorders such as PCOS and to hormonally active environmental substances. Only then do we plan your metabolic infusion. It is always a complement. Diet, exercise and the treatment of possible causes remain the foundation.

An honest assessment

We use metabolic infusions only as a complement – they do not replace diet and exercise or guideline-based treatment. Their effectiveness has not been scientifically proven for every use; we discuss openly what makes sense for you.

Who metabolic infusions may be suitable for

What may speak in favour

  • You would like medical support with your weight management

  • Hashimoto's, PCOS or hormonal disorders are known in your case

When a different approach is needed

An infusion is not a weight-loss remedy. In cases of marked overweight, diabetes or eating disorders, treatment by your GP or a specialist, nutritional counselling and, where appropriate, psychotherapy are part of the picture. During pregnancy and in cases of kidney or heart disease, we first clarify whether an infusion is an option.

In four steps

How metabolic infusions are carried out

  1. Appointment

You can book your appointment by phone on 089 299655 or online via Doctolib. Please feel free to bring any existing results.

  2. Conversation and examination

We discuss your weight history, symptoms, cycle and medication. Where needed, we examine you and take blood.

  3. Treatment plan

Based on the results, we discuss possible causes, whether an infusion makes sense, what it contains and what it will cost.

  4. Treatment and support

You receive the infusion at our practice. As we go along, we discuss your progress and adjust the plan.

Transparent from the start

Costs and health insurance

Metabolic infusions are generally self-pay services, billed under the German Fee Schedule for Physicians (GOÄ). Statutory health insurance (GKV) generally does not cover them; private health insurance reimburses them in part, depending on the plan. Whether examinations with a medical indication, such as of the thyroid, are covered by your health insurer depends on your insurance status. We will tell you before treatment what the costs will be.

The background in detail – click to expand.

What metabolism is

Metabolism refers to all the chemical processes by which the body turns food into energy and building blocks. How much energy it uses at rest depends on factors such as muscle mass, age, hormones, sleep and exercise. Over the years, muscle mass decreases and the basal metabolic rate falls. During the menopause, hormones and fat distribution also change. Stress and too little sleep can also affect metabolism and eating habits. This is why weight can rise even though you are not eating more than before. This is not a personal failing but has physical reasons that we look at together.

Hormones, thyroid and weight

In women, hormones have a strong influence on metabolism. An underactive thyroid, for example in Hashimoto's disease, can slow metabolism and may be accompanied by tiredness and weight gain. In polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a reduced effect of insulin often plays a role. It can favour weight gain and make losing weight harder. The menopause and certain medications also change metabolism. Hashimoto's disease is one of Prof. Schulte-Uebbing's research focuses. If such causes are found and treated, this is often more important than any infusion. That is why clarification comes first in our practice.

What a metabolic infusion can do – and what it cannot

Metabolic booster infusions can contain nutrients that are involved in metabolic processes, such as B vitamins or minerals. They are based on the idea that good nutrient supply supports the body's own processes. However, an infusion cannot make you lose weight. Weight changes mainly through the balance between energy intake and expenditure, that is, through diet and exercise. An infusion can accompany these steps, for example if there is a nutrient deficiency or if you would like medical support while changing your habits. That it speeds up weight loss has not been scientifically proven.

Environmental substances and metabolism

Some environmental substances act in the body in a similar way to hormones. They are called endocrine disruptors; examples include certain plasticisers, the phthalates. Research is discussing whether they may also affect metabolism and body weight. As an environmental physician, Prof. Schulte-Uebbing has long been concerned with these substances. A paper by him and colleagues is entitled “Pollutants as the cause or trigger of endocrine disorders and chronic diseases. Amino acids in the prevention or treatment of diseases caused (in part) by pollutants” (Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine, 2018; published in German). In the consultation, we therefore also ask about possible exposures in your everyday life and surroundings.

Changing weight for the long term

The foundation remains a balanced diet, regular exercise, enough sleep and good stress management. Small, lasting steps are often easier to keep up than strict diets. What matters is a goal that fits your everyday life. The focus is on your health, not just the number on the scales. For marked overweight, there are guideline-based treatments, including nutritional counselling, exercise programmes and, in certain cases, medication. We advise you on which options may be suitable for you and, where needed, refer you to specialist colleagues. A metabolic infusion can accompany this path, but it cannot replace it.

Good questions. Clear answers.

Frequently asked questions about metabolic infusions

Can't find your question? Give us a call – we will take the time.

Will I lose weight with a metabolic infusion?

No, not through the infusion alone. Weight changes mainly through diet, exercise and the treatment of possible causes such as an underactive thyroid. A metabolic infusion can accompany this process, for example if there is a nutrient deficiency. We will give you an honest assessment of what it can and cannot do.

What is a metabolic booster?

This is what we call an infusion with vital nutrients that is intended to support the body's own metabolic processes. The term describes the aim, not a proven effect. We decide which substances the infusion contains based on your findings and explain this to you in detail.

Does health insurance cover the costs?

Metabolic infusions are generally self-pay services, billed under the German Fee Schedule for Physicians (GOÄ). Statutory health insurance (GKV) generally does not cover them; private health insurance reimburses them in part, depending on the plan. We will tell you before treatment what the costs will be.

Could an underactive thyroid be behind my weight gain?

That is possible. An underactive thyroid, for example in Hashimoto's disease, can slow metabolism and may be accompanied by tiredness, feeling cold and weight gain. We investigate this with blood tests and, where needed, further examinations. If an underactive thyroid is found, treating it comes first.

Can I combine the infusion with a diet?

Yes, as support for a balanced change of diet. We tend to advise against very strict diets, because they are hard to stick to and can lead to nutrient deficiencies. We discuss with you how to make sure you are well supplied and adapt the infusion to your situation.

How often are metabolic infusions advisable?

We decide this individually. Your findings, your goals and how you are getting on over time are what matter. Sometimes a series of infusions is planned, sometimes a single one is enough. Follow-up values help us adjust the plan.

I have diabetes – can I have a metabolic infusion?

We look into this particularly carefully. Some infusion solutions contain sugar, and high-dose vitamin C can briefly distort the readings of some blood glucose meters. Please bring your current values and your medication plan with you. Your diabetes care remains in the hands of your GP practice or your specialist diabetes practice.

Can I have a metabolic infusion during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

During pregnancy and breastfeeding, a metabolic infusion is generally not an option. At this time, good care for mother and child and a balanced diet take priority. We are happy to advise you on what to look out for regarding diet and weight.
